Hudson Valley Migration
Five-Year Summary —2007-2012
•
Over the five-year period, migratory activity across the Hudson Valley resulted in a net loss of
21,517 households.
•
The region lost 36,615 households to interstate migration; intrastate migration resulted in a net gain
of 15,010 households.
•
On average, one out of every 18.1 households left the region. The ratio of migrants to non-migrants
ranged from a high of 1:15.5 in Putnam to a low of 1:20.8 in Rockland.
•
Total migratory activity resulted in a net loss of $991.47 million in adjusted gross income (AGI).
•
In all cases, intrastate migratory activity exceeded that of interstate migratory activity.
•
Putnam County experienced the highest level of intrastate migration at 77.27 percent of all inflows
and 62.78 percent of all outflows. Rockland the lowest, at 55.21 percent and 43.63 percent,
respectively.
•
Consistent with trend, the largest net inflow (17,417) came from New York City (NYC) with the
majority of these households migrating from Bronx County (The Bronx).
•
In both Rockland and Westchester the most important migratory activity occurred with NYC. Across
the balance of the region, the most important was intra-regional.
•
A non-trivial migratory activity with contiguous counties—interstate and intrastate—is a strong
indicator that an important level of migratory activity was due to a reason other than a change in
employment.
•
Putnam County was the most likely to experience migratory activity with a contiguous county while
Rockland and Dutchess were the least likely.
•
Consistent with trend, the Northeast Region was the most important source of inflows into the
Hudson Valley while the Southern Region was the most important destination for households
leaving the Hudson Valley.
o
Outbound migration to the Southern Region as a percent of all interstate migration was the
highest in Sullivan followed by Orange and Ulster.
o
Northeast Regional migration as a percent of all interstate migration was the highest in
Rockland County at more than one-half of both inflows and outflows.

Dutchess County
Five-year analysis — 2007-2012

rate of less than 1.00 percent (4,123 households), rising from 104,606 households in 2007 to
108,729 in 2012.
•
Existing residents created 6,266 new households; migratory activity resulted in a net loss of
2,143 households. For the period,
o
26,222 households moved into the county;
o
28,365 households moved out of the county.
•
On average, one out of every 18.8 households left the region.
•
Total migratory activity resulted in a net loss of $45.29 million in adjusted gross income (AGI).
•
Migratory activity among contiguous counties — both intrastate and interstate — accounted
for 29.44 percent of all inflows and 26.38 percent of all outflows.
•
Intrastate activity constituted 66.00 percent of all inflows and 53.58 percent of all outflows.
•
Consistent with trend, the most significant intrastate activity was intra-regional at 59.44
percent of all intrastate inflows and 53.98 percent of all intrastate outflows.
o
With the exception of Ulster, Dutchess gained households from every county in the
region. The largest net inflow occurred with Westchester County at 1,231 households,
followed by Putnam County at 765 households (Chart 1, Table 1). See Chart 2 for income
data.
•
Migratory activity with the five counties of New York City (NYC) represented 23.62 percent of
all intrastate inflows and 20.37 percent of all intrastate outflows.
o
Consistent with trend, migratory activity with NYC resulted in a net inflow of 992
households, with 32.51 percent of inflows migrating from Bronx County and 25.12

More than one-third of all interstate flows were within the Northeast Region (Chart 5, Table 3).
See Chart 6 for income data.
•
Foreign migration was relatively small at 2.0 percent of all inflows and 1.30 percent of all
outflows.

Dutchess County
Year-over-year analysis — 2011-2012
•
Year-over-year, the number of households in Dutchess County increased 2.67 percent (2,827
households), from 105,902 in 2011 to 108,729 in 2012.
•
Existing residents created 3,652 new households, while migration resulted in a net loss of 825
households. For the period,
•
o
5,296 households moved into the county;
o
6,121 households moved out of the county.
More than 80.00 percent ($37.08 million) of the five-year loss in adjusted gross income (AGI)
occurred in 2011-2012.
•
Overall, one out of every 17.8 households moved out of the county.
•
Migratory activity with contiguous counties — both intrastate and interstate — accounted for
29.78 percent of all inflows and 26.55 percent of all outflows.
•
Intrastate activity accounted for the majority of all migratory activity at 65.41 percent of all
inflows and 53.70 percent of all outflows.
•
The most important migratory activity occurred within the Hudson Valley at 57.02 percent of
all intrastate inflows and 51.84 percent of all intrastate outflows. This finding is consistent with
trend.
o
With the exception of Ulster and Sullivan, Dutchess gained households from all counties
in the region. The largest net inflow occurred with Westchester at 134 households,
followed by Putnam at 96 households (Chart 7, Table 4). See Chart 8 for income data.
•
The second most important migratory activity occurred with the five counties of NYC, at 25.09
percent of all intrastate inflows and 20.87 percent of all intrastate outflows.
o
As is typically the case, migratory activity with NYC resulted in a net inflow (183
households), with the majority of these households migrating from Bronx County (Chart
9, Table 5). See Chart 10 for income data.
•
Interstate activity accounted for 33.72 percent of all inflows and 44.65 percent of all outflows.
Consistent with the five-year trend, the majority of interstate flows were within the Southern
Region (Chart 11, Table 6). See Chart 12 for income data.
•
Foreign migration was negligible, at less than one percent of all inflows and 1.65 percent of all
outflows.
