The C om pendium fo r Coast and Sea is an integrated knowledge docum ent about the socio­
economic, environm ental and in stitu tio n a l aspects o f the Coast and Sea in Flanders and Belgium.
The docum ent aggregates disperse inform a tion and data fro m Flemish and Belgian marine and
m aritim e research. The integrated and m u ltid is c ip lin a ry character o f the C om pendium aims to
increase the com m unication w ith in the netw ork o f marine experts and intends to enhance the
v is ib ility and accessibility o f marine research. In th is regard, the C om pendium fits in w ith the
European aspirations fo r a sustainable and Integrated M aritim e Policy and Integrated Coastal Zone
Management.
The knowledge docum ent consists of:
■ An overview o f the marine scientific landscape in Flanders/Belgium (Chapter 1)
■ A sum m ary o f the knowledge on d iffe re n t user fu nctio ns o f the coast and sea (Chapter 2)
■ A non-exhaustive overview o f relevant regulations and policy instrum ents and an elaboration on
the marine science-policy interface (Chapter 3).
The C om pendium fo r Coast and Sea is an initiative o f the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) in
collaboration w ith a group o f experts consisting o f scientists, policym akers, civil society
organisations, etc.
The ta rg et audience o f the C om pendium fo r Coast and Sea are scientists, the broad group o f
experts who are actively and professionally involved w ith the coast and sea - at an international,
European, national, regional and local level - as well as representatives from business and drivers o f
innovation.
The docum ent is published in English and Dutch, and w ill be updated w ith a fixe d frequency. The
C om pendium can also be consulted online on: w w w.com pendium coastandsea.be.
