“It is not about the technology; it’s about sharing knowledge and information, communicating efficiently, building learning communities and creating a culture of professionalism in schools. These are the key responsibilities of all educational leaders.” – MARION GINAPOLIS OCTOBER 2012 The 2012-13 NCDPI Professional Development Calendar is now live on the Professional Development website. Cynthia Crowdus is the IIS Project Coordinator, working closely with the Learning Systems team toward the development and implementation of the IIS. As the weather turns cooler, Cynthia recommends the following for pleasure reading: s The Aquariums of Pyongyang: Ten Years in the North Korean Gulag, by Kang Chol Hwan. A haunting, autobiographical account of Kang’s experiences in North Korea, suffering capture and time at a concentration camp, and his eventual escape to South Korea. s Lucky Jim, by Kingsley Amis. A comedy about a disenchanted professor. Amis presents a hilarious and flawless satire about post-war British academia. This is hands-down one of the funniest books I’ve read. s Kitchen, by Banana Yoshimoto. A young Japanese woman is dealing with the recent death of her grandmother. This novel tells, in a deceptively simple and beautiful narrative, a tale of food and love against a backdrop of tragedy. TIP: Last month we invited you to check out some of the resources DPI has created to help you understand the new standards. These resources will be available in the Instructional Improvement System (IIS) when it is available. This month we are inviting you to check out some free resources that could be made available in the IIS. Remember, the goal is to bring as many rich resources together in one location to minimize your search time so let us know what you think by sending an email to IIS_Ready@dpi.nc.gov and join the October 16 Webinar to discuss the IIS.
