“Do not train children to learning by force and harshness, but direct them to it
by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover
with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each.” – PLATO

Ben Comer is the Instructional Improvement System Project Manager for NCDPI Learning Systems.
Ben offers a book, a website and a blog on learning in the digital age.
s Personal Learning Networks, by Will Richardson and Rob Mancabelli. Focuses on using the
Internet to build global learning networks to explore intellectual and creative passions with
people around the world. The book points out how schools will need to transform to support this
type of networked learning.
s 21st Century Fluency Project: http://www.committedsardine.com/. A collaborative effort of a
group of experienced educators and entrepreneurs who are developing resources to assist in
making learning more relevant to life today.
s Geoff Fletcher’s blog: http://setda.typepad.com/digital/. Geoff Fletcher is an expert in the field of
digital learning. This blog, which focuses on digital content in K-12 education, is a feature of the
State Education Technology Directors Association (SETDA) website.
TIP: The new Instructional Improvement System will be piloted in spring 2013, allowing a much more efficient way for
teachers to search for instructional resources for teaching the Common Core State and Essential Standards. This
calendar features links to resources that teachers can begin using now. Once the IIS is available, all of these resources
will be easily searchable from one site. Please send questions or comments about the IIS to IIS_Ready@dpi.nc.gov.
