Spotlight on Library!
WINTER 2016
FROM THE MEDIA CENTER: Media is not just about Checking Out Books …. Students K5 see me for 50 minutes every 6day cycle. We do love our books and part of that is book checkout, plus we learn about different authors/illustrators and types of literature. We also learn information skills by using technology, collab, databases, ebooks skills they will need for a lifetime. Some examples of what we learn are how to: ● evaluate what is a good website ● find books in the library ● create a bibliography ● follow copyright/fair use rules ● search for information online A big part of the Media curriculum is about Digital Citizenship and being safe online. It’s not just about Internet Safety anymore. It is about Digital Citizenship. We teach our students to become good citizens at school, home & in the community. With this generation of Digital “Natives”, we need to teach them to become good citizens Online. Subjects I address in media are tailored to the different grade levels but include: Adult permission to go online
Don’t go into chat rooms Create a secure password
Don’t meet online people in person Don’t share personal information
Netiquette good online manners What to do if something you see Use Avatars, not real pictures is inappropriate
The three most challenging areas for parents and educators now are: 1) Digital footprint what you post online stays there forever 2) Cyber bullying One in three online teens (ages 1317) have been cyberbullied. Girls are more likely to be targeted. (Pew Internet & American Life Project) 3) Amount of screen time those aged 818 spend more than 7.5 hours a day with devices and this amount of time growing (Kaiser Family Foundation New York Times, Jan 20) Here is one fantastic resource about keeping your kids safe online:
Common Sense Media
https://www.commonsensemedia.org/ You can find all kinds of guides to video games, movies, books, and information about how to set parental control on digital devices, plus much more. Important News from the School Nurse!
This month Kindergarten, First and Second grade students were involved in
the Flu Prevention Program put on by the Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of
Minnesota. *Funded by Kohl’s
Feel free to ask them about the four things they learned! Also, ask them
about the glow light and how they practiced washing their hands.
There are four basic steps everyone can take to prevent the spread of
influenza:
•
•
•
•
Get vaccinated (if your doctor recommends it)
Wash your hands
Cover your cough and sneeze (Vampire Cough)
Stay home from work, school or childcare when sick to limit the spread of the flu
How is influenza spread?
Influenza is most often spread from person to person when an ill person coughs
and sneezes. Influenza virus can also be spread through hands contaminated with
the virus when a healthy person touches their nose, mouth or eyes.
If you are exposed to someone with influenza, how long does it take for you
to get symptoms?
The time from exposure to disease is called the incubation period. The incubation
period for influenza is one to seven days.
How long can a person with influenza spread the virus?
People with influenza can spread the virus from one to two days before their
symptoms begin to seven days after their symptoms start. Children, especially
small children, and people with weakened immune systems can sometimes
spread the virus 10 days after symptoms start. Even though people can spread
influenza before and after developing symptoms, they spread the virus most often
when they have a fever.

WINTER 2016
As part of a Statewide Health Improvement Plan grant (SHIP), the

advancements in technology, all fitness reports will be viewed
online. Below are the steps to access your child(ren)’s fitness reports.
•
•
•
•
•
Go to the district School View website.
Log in using your user name and password.
Select the child you want to view.
Click on Document Center on the bottom left side of the screen.
Click on Show Fitness Document.
Thanks so much for your flexibility as we transition with a new
approach to reporting scores to families. If you do not have access to a
computer, you may request a copy from me at
