The scholarship covers 100% tuition,
reimbursement for academic fees such as books
and non-expendable equipment. While in the
program, the student is commissioned as a
Second Lieutenant in the Army Reserve. As a
condition of the program, typically during the
summer months, the Reserve Officer will work six
weeks on Active Duty Training (ADT) at an Army Medical Treatment Facility. The Reserve
Officer can still earn credit for working at his/her own school facility.
The program offers one- to three-year scholarships to veterinary students. Upon graduation,
the service obligation starts with a minimum obligation of two years and the maximum four
years. The service obligation can be deferred in cases of residencies in which case the
obligation begins once the residency is complete.
Congratulations, Matt!

West Coast oyster growers are dependent on commercial hatcheries for
seed. In 2006 and 2007, the commercial oyster hatcheries were severely
impacted with outbreaks of Vibrio tubiashii and current larval production
losses due to the presence of high concentrations of V. tubiashii in the
incoming seawater have significantly reduced seed supplies. In spite of the
economic importance of Vibrio species in the cultivation of larval and
juvenile bivalves in shellfish hatcheries, very little is known about the
virulence mechanisms employed by these pathogens. We have recently
shown that the metalloprotease, but not the cytolysin, acts as one of the critical factors for the
toxicity of V. tubiashii supernatants on Pacific oyster larvae.

Dr. Stacy Semevolos has been awarded funding of her project, “Molecular Characterization
of Early Osteochondrosis Lesions in Prepubertal Foals” by the American Quarter Horse
Association for $22,700. She is the principal investigator and Dr. Katja Zellmer is a coinvestigator. They will be using laser capture microdissection to harvest specific cells from
the cartilage of young foals, in hopes of determining an etiology for osteochondrosis.
