THE CAMPAIGN FOR UMKC
UMKC is ready to take
its place at the top
Our country and our community are in the midst of a
critical yet exciting time, one full of endless possibilities
and sizable challenges. We need innovators to fill unmet
niches in business and the health sciences, problem solvers
to tackle the educational crises in urban communities and
visionaries to champion the arts.
Those leaders are here at UMKC. We are poised to take
our place as a model urban research university. Across our
campuses and in our diverse schools and departments, the
momentum toward that goal is palpable.
UMKC’s world-class programs, such as those in the School
of Dentistry and the Conservatory of Music and Dance, are
already making a dramatic difference locally and globally. In
the past few years, we have been building on that tradition
of excellence. Our nationally recognized Institute for Urban
Education (IUE) and Institute for Entrepreneurship and
Innovation (IEI) exemplify the types of programs we will
continue to deploy to meet today’s – and tomorrow’s – most
pressing needs.
Today, we are poised to take the next step toward building
UMKC into a preeminent urban university that will have an
even greater impact.
Revitalized by creative leadership and poised for a new era of
success through the generosity of alumni and friends, UMKC stands
ready to take its place as a model urban research university.
This is the time. The need for our university to offer
innovative, effective programs that will help our city and
our nation regain their competitive edge is greater now than
ever before.
This is the place. UMKC is in a position to seize the
opportunities before us. With our diverse student body,
talented faculty and forward-thinking administrators,
everything is in place for us to succeed.
Join us in this campaign to make UMKC the university it is
destined to be.

This is the time.
This is the place.
UMKC is ready to rise up and fulfill
its mission through implementation
of our strategic plan goals.
Place Student Success
at the Center
Our goal is to provide an
optimal learning environment
for students, create outstanding
academic programs and
experiences, ensure student
support is seamless and develop
a vibrant campus community.
Excel in the Visual and
Performing Arts
Our goal is to achieve greater
national and international
acclaim in the visual and
performing arts as our
programs embrace discovery,
creativity and learning
of the highest caliber.
Lead in Life and
Health Sciences
We will strive to attain national
recognition for excellence in
research, expand opportunities
for clinical practitioner training
and provide outstanding health
care delivery.
Embrace Diversity
We will build on our tradition
of celebrating diversity in
all aspects of university life,
creating inclusive environments,
culturally competent citizens
and globally-oriented curricula
and programs.
Advance Urban
Engagement
As a model urban university,
UMKC will fully engage in
the Kansas City community
to enhance education, public
health, the arts and economic
development. We will seek
to develop highly successful
programs that can be replicated
in other urban areas.
Promote Research
and Economic
Development
We will provide world-class
scholarship, encourage
entrepreneurship, foster
innovation, increase technology
transfer and build relationships
that result in economic and
workforce development.
Empower students to achieve
Attract and retain outstanding faculty
UMKC is committed to creating a community where students can thrive. Our low
faculty-to-student ratio gives the university the feel of a small, liberal arts college, while
our nationally recognized professional schools offer students opportunities that can
be found only at a major research institution. The Campaign for UMKC will allow us to
offer our students essential services such as:
The most effective way to recruit and retain the best academic minds is to offer
competitive endowed chairs, professorships and faculty scholars. Endowed faculty
positions tell the most sought-after candidates that UMKC is committed to achieving our
academic and research goals. Funds from The Campaign for UMKC will be used to add:
Scholarships
UMKC needs a talented and diverse student body
in order to achieve academic excellence. In today’s
competitive educational environment, accessible needand merit-based scholarships tell student recruits that
their success is our top priority. Goal: $48.9 million
Endowed Trustees’ Scholars Program
Designation as a Trustees’ Scholar is the highest honor a
UMKC student can receive. Our goal is to ensure that
this essential academic program, which helps us recruit
the most capable, highest-quality students, is funded
in perpetuity. Goal: $4.5 million
University College
A University College will create an academic home with
relevant support services for our deciding students
and students in transition (transfer students, students
changing majors and students looking to complete a
baccalaureate degree). Goal: $2 million
Honors College
In addition to scholarships, students need the support
and encouragement of caring mentors and role models,
innovative course offerings, in-depth research projects,
and horizon-expanding study abroad opportunities. The
Honors College will provide these services and more to
our highest-caliber students. Goal: $5 million
Law Library Enhancement
This updated space will include a state-of-the-art
technology classroom to emulate the high-tech,
collaborative environment in which practicing lawyers
work. The open and inviting design, along with numerous
amenities, will make the law library a gathering place for
students, faculty and visitors to research, study and learn.
Goal: $1.5 million
16 Endowed Chairs
One of the most prestigious honors that we can bestow
on a UMKC faculty member is that of endowed chair.
An endowed chair position rewards the highest levels
of academic and research accomplishments with the
assurance of ongoing financial support for continued
performance. A named endowed chair position, secured
for $1.5 million, ensures a donor’s name is associated in
perpetuity with a faculty position that signifies excellence.
Goal: $24 million
20 Endowed Professorships
Endowed professorships encourage those with
distinguished work in teaching and research to bring their
knowledge and expertise to UMKC. Faculty members
holding endowed professorships elevate the opportunities
available to our students; they also challenge their
colleagues to reach new heights. A gift of $750,000
provides for a named endowed professorship.
Goal: $15 million
15 Faculty Scholars
Providing growth and mentorship opportunities for
promising faculty demonstrates to these future academic
leaders that UMKC is committed to their success. A gift
of $550,000 provides for a named faculty scholar position
that will offer intellectually stimulating and challenging
opportunities for those with unlimited potential.
Goal: $8.3 million
Making all the
right moves
Develop and expand world-class programs
Create facilities that enhance learning
A central component of becoming a model urban university is creating
groundbreaking programs that identify and address some of the most critical needs
faced by our city and our country. UMKC is already charting new territory, developing
innovative programs that are grabbing national attention, pushing our university up in
national rankings and piquing the interest of some of the best and brightest faculty.
To achieve our aggressive goals of increased student enrollment, new faculty
recruitment and new program development, UMKC must renovate many existing
buildings into new state-of-the art facilities that foster learning. These include:
Urban Education Research Center
The creation of the Urban Education Research Center
will enable the UMKC School of Education to assess
through scientific methodology the effectiveness of the
school’s teacher preparation and community partnership
innovations, and to ensure lessons learned are used for
transformational change in educational systems.
Center for Translational/Clinical Research
for Urban Health
This interdisciplinary research center will translate
research into practice, bringing promising discoveries
from bench to bedside and producing new prevention
and treatment options for patients. Goal: $5 million
Goal: $4.5 million
Dental Innovation Clinic
This clinic will allow students to build their clinical and
business skills as they treat community patients in a
setting that emulates a small dental practice. This will
put UMKC at the forefront of preparing future dentists
with the full suite of skills and experience they need to
be successful. Goal: $2.5 million
Institute for Entrepreneurship
and Innovation
Ranked by the Princeton Review as one of the top
25 graduate entrepreneurial programs in the nation,
the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation
combines education with real-world entrepreneurial
opportunities to develop graduates who will be the
business leaders of tomorrow. Goal: $5 million
New Executive Building for the
Bloch School
The new Executive Building – a 50,000-square-foot
facility – will be built adjacent to the existing Bloch
School of Management. It will house high-impact
graduate and executive programs and the school’s awardwinning Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation.
Miller Nichols Library Renovation
The Miller Nichols Library is a natural gathering point
for students. This project will include improving access
and navigation within the facility and creating a student
commons featuring electronic resources to bring students
together for research and study. Goal: $3 million
Goal: $25 million
School of Medicine Research Space
Renovation
By transforming existing space at the School of Medicine
into technologically advanced labs, we will contribute
to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the most
serious health problems. Goal: $10 million
James C. Olson Performing
Arts Center Expansion
Performing arts at UMKC are garnering worldwide
attention. To keep pace with the growing popularity
of the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance, the
Kansas City Repertory Theatre and the Department of
Theatre, we must build new learning areas and add
backstage spaces for set and costume production.
Goal: $20.8 million
Chemistry Lab Renovation
As enrollment in our popular chemistry-based programs
surges, so has the demand for lab space. We must add
new labs and renovate existing ones to prepare students
to make an immediate impact as they begin their careers
in science. Goal: $1 million
In recent years, UMKC has made significant and
demonstrable progress toward fulfilling its vision as a firstrate urban university. That’s why, as chairman of the UMKC
Foundation, I am proud to be a part of the essential next
step in this progression – The Campaign for UMKC, the
university’s seven-year, $250 million capital campaign.
The key components to success are in place. Look no
further than UMKC to find dedicated, thoughtful leaders
who are driven to accomplish lofty, yet achievable strategic
goals. Look to UMKC to find faculty, staff and students
who strive every day to make our community and, indeed,
our world, better through research, commitment and action.
A critical component to UMKC’s success is the dedication
and passion of our alumni and friends. It is only with your
support that UMKC can continue to make the right moves
on the path to greatness. It is only through your generosity
that we can continue to attract top educators and students
to build on our tradition of excellence in education. We
cannot do this without you.
This is the time. UMKC is the place. Thank you for joining
us in this initiative.
