Accountancy Chair Jack Elfrink told CCPI that Accountancy courses have traditionally taught
U.S. accounting principles, but experts in the field suspect that international standards used by the
rest of the world for financial reporting will eventually be accepted by the United States as well.
Dr. Elfrink stated that some of the larger accounting firms will be starting to use international
standards within a couple of years, and questions pertaining to them will be on the CPA exam.
The Department of Accountancy has decided to add an additional semester hour to its two
intermediate and its advanced accounting courses to anticipate these changes. He proposes to
begin teaching the additional material in fall 2009 for ACCT 341, the first class in the sequence, in
spring 2010 for ACCT 342, and in fall 2010 for advanced accountancy 441. Revisions are also
proposed to the Accountancy major and minor to accommodate the proposed changes.
Change: Indicate that this is a Writing Instruction in the Disciplines course on the last line of the
course description.

2
Chairperson Parsons pointed out that guidelines in the CCPI Policies and Procedures indicate that
1 credit hour of internship is equivalent to a minimum of 40 work hours, not 35 hours as indicated
on the request.
Changes: Change “35 hours” to “40 hours,” and change “(105 hours minimum)” to “(120 hours
minimum)” in the proposed prerequisites.
Dr. Elfrink told CCPI that Accountancy majors participate in internships at such sites as Caterpillar
in Peoria, John Deere in the Quad Cities, CPA firms, and the state Auditor’s Office in Springfield.
MOTION APPROVED WITH CHANGES 9 YES – 0 NO – 0 AB

Motion: To approve ACCT 441 (Melkumian/Engel)
Ms. Nicholson expressed concerns that some students will take three hours of the advanced class
when the catalog will indicate the course is 4 s.h. since students entering the sequence will not take
the course for 4 s.h. until fall 2010. She said normally every attempt is made to match catalog
descriptions with what is actually offered for courses.

Request for Change in Minor
1.
Accountancy
Motion: To approve Accountancy minor (Neumann/Piletic)
3
When asked why the minor specifies that students can take “two (or three) of the following”
specified courses, Dr. Elfrink explained that Business and Marketing majors must take ACCT 201
and 202, but Marketing minors can only take ACCT 201, thus they would need additional
electives.
Changes:

Add title of minor to top of request.

Indicate that only 3 hours of ACCT 420 can count toward the minor.
MOTION APPROVED WITH CHANGES 9 YES – 0 NO – 0 AB

Request for Change in Major

Motion: To approve Accountancy major (Melkumian/Engel)
A question was raised about the requested library materials, International Financial Reporting
Standards. Chairperson Parsons told CCPI that at Tuesday’s Faculty Senate meeting University
Libraries representatives had indicated that planning for needed library resources will be easier
now that feasibility studies are required for new programs; Library resources will be part of that
advance planning. CCPI noted that although University Libraries will now receive information
about resources needed for new majors and certificates through the feasibility studies, they will not
receive information about changes to existing programs, so it is important for departments to
communicate that directly to their library liaisons. Chairperson Parsons related that the Library
has had a flat budget for academic departments for the last two years, but it was stated at the
Senate meeting that University Libraries tries to find the funds to purchase needed materials when
faculty members request them.
Changes:



