Connections
Preschool
Early childhood is a time of great discovery! Support your 3- or 4-year
old child’s growth by enrolling them in a half-day preschool program led
by licensed early childhood teachers. Families may qualify for financial
assistance for fee-based classes; some attendance areas also have classes at
no cost for eligible families. Some classrooms are offered in conjunction with
Early Childhood Special Education.

Connect to Skills: What to Expect
Young children are eager to learn and play. Every Connections Preschool class gives children
an opportunity to play with other children while learning important prekindergarten skills,
such as listening and cooperation. Beginning math, reading and writing skills are introduced.
Children assume increasing personal responsibility and independence as they grow and
develop. Classes are well staffed to meet the needs of all children.
Connect with Experience: Licensed Teachers
All Connections Preschool teachers are fully licensed by the Minnesota Department of
Education in early learning principles and techniques. Teachers lead hands-on activities that
address children’s individual needs and interests, while providing important prekindergarten
content. Staff support and training is provided through School District 196.
Connect with School: Prepare for Kindergarten
The curriculum used in all Connections Preschool classrooms follows the standards outlined
in the Minnesota Early Childhood Indicators of Progress. It is aligned with School District 196’s
K-12 learning standards. Implementation of curriculum content helps young children develop
their skills, such as:
• social and emotional
• cognitive
• language and literacy
• physical and motor
• creativity and art
Connect to Learning: Parents as Partners
Parents are children’s first and most important teachers. All Connections Preschool classes
offer ways for parents to be actively involved in their child’s education by volunteering in
class, participating in field trips or attending parenting workshops. Parents are strongly
encouraged to get involved in as many ways as they can, which will boost their child’s
chances for school success, now and in the future. For the 3-year old, there is an opportunity
to attend a weekly parenting class that meets throughout the school year.
Connect to Values: Early Learning Beliefs
Connections Preschool staff believe:
• Early childhood is a remarkable time of
psychological, physical, social and academic
development.
• Learning is a social process where children
learn through play, exploration and inquiry.
• Families are a child’s first and most influential
teachers.
• Each child has unique strengths.
• Children thrive in a safe environment where
their needs are met through mutual respect,
nurturing and consistency.
• Strong family, school and community
partnerships help ensure a child’s success in
school.

Before Enrolling in Preschool
• Early Childhood Screening: 4-year old children must go through a free early childhood
and development screening before entering a preschool program. Screening is done
by trained staff and includes a review of: vision and hearing, height and weight,
immunizations, development and health. Please call 651-423-7899 to schedule a
screening appointment.
• Immunizations: Your child’s immunizations must be up to date. Contact your child’s
health provider or the Dakota County Public Health Department (www.co.dakota.mn.us
or 952-891-7528) to learn about immunization requirements.
