Junqueira’s Basic Histology Text and Atlas, 14th Ed. by Anthony L. Mescher
Course Description: This is a basic histology course which will guide the student through learning the microscopic structure and
function of the cells, tissues and organs that make up the body.
Course Objectives: This course teaches the microscopic structure and correlated function of cells, tissues and organs. In this course
you will learn:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Components of a cell
Cell types
Basic tissues of the body that are constructed of cells and their products
Organization and function of the organs of the body
Attendance Policy: Students are expected to attend each lecture. Students should want to come to class and are expected to be on
time for class and lab. ATTENDANCE WILL BE RECORDED. The instructor may assign an “F” for absences in excess of 25% (seven
lectures) of regularly scheduled class meetings. Absences neither excused nor unexcused, do not absolve the student from meeting
class assignments. NO MAKE-UP exams will be given. In the event of an EMERGENCY, I will allow ONLY one exception for a lecture
exam. Exam make-ups will only be considered for documented, excusable reasons. Lecture exam make-up format will be at the
discretion of the instructor (oral examinations, essay, etc.) NO make-up for in class activities or quizzes will be given. If there is an
illness or emergency, you are expected to contact the instructor immediately and be prepared to show documentation (doctor’s
excuse, etc). Failure to contact the instructor within 24 hours will forfeit any change for making up any missed exams.
Withdrawal from the course: If a student wishes to withdraw from the course, it is the student’s responsibility to initiate withdrawal
paperwork. Failure by the student to complete the paperwork will force the instructor to assign a grade of F.
Disability Statement: If you have a physical, psychological, and/or learning disability that might affect your performance in class,
please contact the Office of Disability Services, B&E 134, (803) 641-3609, as soon as possible. The Disability Services Office will
determine appropriate accommodations based on documentation.
Honor Pledge: Students will be expected to endorse the USCA Honor Pledge on every assignment: ‘On my honor as a University of
South Carolina Aiken student, I have neither given nor received any unauthorized aid on this assignment/examination. To the best of
my knowledge, I am not in violation of academic honesty’.
Electronic Devices: I expect your full attendance and participation in class. If a student disrupts the class I reserve the right to ask for
their removal from the classroom. Cell phones or other electronic devices (smart watch, head phones, iPod, etc. ) are expected to be
TURNED OFF during lecture and laboratory times and are not permitted for use during examinations or quizzes. If you are expecting
an emergency phone call (interview, relative in hospital, emergency call, etc.) you should inform me at the beginning of class and
exception will be made to have you sit near the door with phone on vibrate to minimize the disruptions to the rest of the class. If
your phone rings during class, you will receive a warning and any additional phone calls you receive may cost you points on your
final grade. There will be NO TEXTING during class.
Laptops are allowed in class under the conditions that they are used to facilitate note-taking, but may NOT be used for anything
unrelated to class.
Computer Use and Email: All official email communications, including class announcements, are made to USCA email accounts.
Students should check their USCA email account on a regular basis and use this account for communication with the instructor. In
order to protect the privacy of each student, the instructor will not reply to email that are sent from a non-USCA account. Grades
and other pertinent class information will be posted to Blackboard which may be accessed through VIP (http://vip.sc.edu)
Methods of Presentation and Evaluation: Information will be presented through lectures and class discussion along with
appropriate visual aids, usually presented in Powerpoint format, however on occasion may be presented via the Light Microscope.
Traditional lecture exams will be used to evaluate student progress in the class. Final grades will be based on the following:
Description
Points
Comments
3 Lecture Exams
360
120 pts each
Weekly Quizzes
100
From the previous 1-2 week’s material, 10 pts each
Participation/Assignments
40
Class Participation and any graded assignments
Total
500 points
Grades: A > 90%; B+>85%; B >80%; C+> 75%; C >60%; D+> 55%; D >50%; F <=50%. Percentage grade can be calculated by dividing
total number of points earned by the student by the total possible points as outlined above.
Exams: There will be 3 lecture exams given during the course. The format of the lecture exams will be at the discretion of the
instructor. ANYTHING that is discussed in class is fair game for the exams. The exams may be a combination of identification,
multiple choice, short answer, and discussion essay. Each of the exams are not cumulative and will only cover the material specified
on the course calendar.
Students will not be allowed any electronic devices on their person during an exam. In addition, students will not be allowed to wear
watches, earphones/buds, or hats during exams. On exam days, students will place all of their belongings at the front of the
classroom. All cell phones must be silences. Any student caught violating these rules will be asked to leave and will receive a 0 on the
test.
Returning/Reviewing Exams: All exams are the property of the instructor, and all exams must be returned to the instructor- failure
to do so will result in the student receiving a 0. Once the exams are graded, students will be allowed to view their exams during class
(if time permits) or scheduled exam review in my office. Any questions on exams or grade disputes must be made in the 2 weeks
immediately following grades being posted. Exams are NOT to be video recorded, photocopied, or photographed. If the content of
an exam is reproduced or recorded by any means or if an exam is ever removed from a classroom, the student responsible will earn
a 0 and will be reported to the Department Chair and the Dean of students and be charged with a violation of the University’s
Academic Honesty policy.
Reading: If you do not read the textbook, you will not be successful in this class! Chapters associated with the lectures are listed on
the course schedule page. Topics discussed in class and additional materials described in the chapters could be on exams. Students
are expected to read the required chapters and it is most helpful if this is done prior to the lecture. In addition, some lectures and/or
videos may be posted for your viewing prior to class so that the lecture period can be used for other activities. The instructor will
inform you when those will be posted.
Participation: All students are expected to participate in class discussions as well as group activities. Participation will be monitored
throughout the semester by the instructor (occasionally through written assignments). At the end of the semester your participation
will be counted as a part of the final grade.
Helpful hints for success in this course:
•
•
This will be an INTENSE course! It is CRUCIAL that you keep up with the readings and lectures. Take every opportunity to
read ahead in the textbook. Read and study EVERY week, not just exam weeks.
• Read the textbook chapter BEFORE coming to class in order to come to the lectures as prepared as possible.
• Take good notes DURING class. Writing things down helps you retain the material.
• Attend ALL lectures, and ASK questions in class.
Find classmates to study with. Talking over the material will significantly enhance your understanding and help you fill in any
blanks in the notes you may have missed.
