Name _____________________________
The period of time between one cell division and the next is called the cell cycle.
Cell division is called mitosis.
Uncontrolled cell division is called cancer.
Examples of cells that rarely divide are skeletal muscle cells and nerve cells.
Examples of cells that frequently divide are skin and the lining of the gastro-intestinal tract.
Three parts of interphase are G1, S, and G2.
During G1 of interphase, cell experience rapid growth and perform normal cell functions.
During S of interphase, DNA is replicated.
During G2 of interphase, organelles and cytoplasm are replicated.
Cytokinesis is division of the cytoplasm to form two identical daughter cells.
IPMAT is a mnemonic(memory) device used to remember the order of the phases of mitosis.
The phases of mitosis that follow interphase are : prophase, metaphase, anaphase, & telophase.
Cytokinesis begins during telophase and ends after telophase is complete.
During interphase, DNA is in the form of chromatin, and looks like hair or spaghetti.
During prophase, chromatin coils to become individual, visible chromosomes or sister chromatids.
During prophase, the nuclear envelope and the nucleolus both disappear.
During prophase, the spindle fibers begin to form as the centrioles start to move towards the poles
of the cell.
During metaphase, the sister chromatids line up at the equator (or metaphase plate) of the cell.
During anaphase, centromeres split, and sister chromatids separate from one another and move
towards opposite poles of the cell.
During telophase, chromosomes uncoil to return to the chromatin form of DNA, so that individual
chromosomes are no longer visible.
During telophase, nuclear envelope and the nucleolus both reappear.
During telophase, spindle fibers disappear.
During cytokinesis, the cytoplasm divides in half, to form two identical daughter cells.
Label the phases of mitosis of the cells below.
