Class Cells Activity Teacher notes: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Get two pieces of white butcher paper, each about four feet long. Pass out organelle index cards to students as they enter the room. Have all students with same organelle sit together. Go over student instructions. Ask if instructions are clear. Have students pick out their notebook-sized organelles from the ones available (have them recognize their organelle to get it from you). 7. Allow only 20 minutes to create and post the cells & organelles. 8. Use remaining time to have group present organelle & function(s) to the class. 9. Students should take notes about all organelles on note guide provided. Get organelle assignment from the instructor, sit with your group. 2. Look up organelle & its function(s) in textbook. 3. ☺If you get the cell wall or cell membrane: Read all these instructions before you begin! If not, skip to step 4. a. USE pencil to sketch, then outline in marker when drawing is complete. b. See text page 63 or 65 for shape of animal or plant cell c. Get piece of butcher paper from teacher d. ☺Leave room for title below drawing, draw the cell shape to fill the entire piece of paper e. If cell membrane, draw the animal cell, representing the cell membrane f. If cell wall, draw the plant cell g. If you have cell membrane, also draw a cell membrane interior to the cell wall on the plant cell h. Put title underlined (with ruler!) below drawing, first in pencil, then go over title in marker i. Tack up both cells on the bulletin board 4. If you have the following, get large organelle picture from teacher, then color according to these instructions: a. nucleus -orange d. golgi apparatus b. mitochondria - red purple c. endoplasmic e. chloroplast - green reticulum - yellow f. vacuole – blue g. lysosome - pink 5. If ribosomes, no coloring required, make function paper 6. If cytoplasm, no coloring required, make function paper 7. See the text to find out the function(s) of organelle. 8. Write the name of the organelle & its function(s) in large, neat, legible letters on a piece of unlined white paper (Landscape orientation) 9. Go over words with marker so that they can be read from across the room. NOTE: E.R. – You must give the functions of both rough and smooth E.R. (Use a separate piece of paper for each) 10. Place all organelles in the appropriate cell. 11. Post function of organelle on the bulletin board near organelle. 12. Present your organelle & function(s) to the class. 13. Take notes on each organelle on note guide. Name________________________________ Name of Organelle 1. Cell membrane 2. Cytoplasm 3. Nucleus 4. Mitochondria 5. Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum 6.
