SSR 2016-13 A Resolution for: Mental Health and Suicidality Awareness Sponsored by: Campus Relations Committee First Reading: October 28th, 2015 Vote: 19-0-0 Speaker Action: ______________________________________________________________ Parker Bennett – Speaker Date WHEREAS: The Northern Iowa Student Government (NISG) represents the interests of the student body at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI); and, RECOGNIZING: That mental health is an important aspect to the well-being of the University of Northern Iowa’s student body, regardless of sex, gender, sexuality, race, class, religion, ethnicity, age, physical and mental ability, and nationality; and RECOGNIZING: That many students in the community have recognized their mental health needs and utilized campus resources to provide support for their needs; and FURTHER RECOGNIZING: That Northern Iowa Student Government recognizes that each student seeks their own wellness in different ways, and respects students’ privacy; and FURTHER RECOGNIZING: That students endure difficult times with or without mental health concerns, and that we stand together; and FURTHER RECOGNIZING: That students on the University of Northern Iowa campus that have had mental health needs appreciate the student support they have received; and FURTHER RECOGNIZING: That students should be aware they are not alone, and that there are many campus resources available for students who are impacted by mental health needs; and FURTHER RECOGNIZING: That the following professional resources are available to students who are seeking support: Student Health Center Counseling Services (273-2676), after hours support by calling 273-2676 and pressing 2 to speak to a mental health professional, oncampus living support through Resident Assistants, Residence Life Coordinators, and Hall Secretaries, and by contacting Joan Thompson-Victim Services Advocate; and FURTHER RECOGNIZING: That the following student organizations, who are not professionals, have formed communities to support students: Northern Iowa Student Government and To Write Love on Her Arms; and BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED: That the Northern Iowa Student Government is supportive of all students in their pursuit of well-being; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: The University of Northern Iowa stands together, united with each other to raise awareness regarding mental health and to support one another; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That copies of this resolution be sent to Joan Thompson, To Write Love on Her Arms, University of Northern Iowa’s Counseling Center, Faculty Senate, oncampus living dormitories, Iowa Governor Terry Branstad, and any other interested party at the discretion of the Speaker.
