Sioux City Journal, IA 12-12-06 How many ethanol and bio-diesel plants are operating in Iowa? In Nebraska? In South Dakota? How many more are in the process of construction or are being planned? -- Sioux City According to Iowa State University Professor of Economics, Robert Wisner, Iowa has 25 operating ethanol plants, eight under construction and 37 plants expanding or being planned. Nebraska has 12 plants operating, 10 under construction and 30 more planned. South Dakota has 12 operating plants and five under construction. ISU Professor of Economics, Roger Ginder, says Iowa has seven existing biodiesel plants, seven under construction and many more in the planning stages. Nebraska has one operating plant with one under construction and South Dakota has one operating plant. Ginder says some plants producing bio-diesel also make other products made of olestra and methyl-ester. Nationwide, there are 87 bio-diesel plants.
