Cedar Rapids Gazette, IA 09-06-06 UI enrollment up; ISU down slightly By: Diane Heldt - The Gazette Enrollment at the University of Iowa for the fall semester is 29,979 students, up 337 from 29,642 last fall, officials announced today. The number of new freshmen totals 4,289, up 440 from 3,849 in 2005. Total undergraduate enrollment stands at 20,738, up 438 students from in 2005. Hogan added that the UI is attracting more minority students in the undergraduate ranks, and the UI's numbers are up among both residents and nonresidents. The number of minority students in UI's first year class is up 14.2 percent over last year. Of the 5,768 freshmen and undergraduate transfers, 2,200 were nonresidents. Iowa State University also saw first-year enrollment increase this fall, but overall enrollment declined, though ISU had its largest freshman and transfer class since 2002. Of the 5,726 new undergraduates at Iowa State this fall, there are 3,983 freshmen, an increase of 5.7 percent (214 students) from fall 2005, and 1,461 transfer students, an increase of 5.3 percent (73 students) from fall 2005. The number of minority freshmen enrolled at ISU has increased 12 percent since fall 2005. ISU has 401 minority freshmen, up from 358 last fall. This fall's freshman class is the second-most diverse on record. Overall student enrollment at ISU is 25,462, about 100 more students than officials had projected for fall 2006, but a decrease of about 1 percent (279 students) compared to fall 2005.
