ISU Catalog Course Description:
Integral calculus, applications of the integral, infinite series, parametric curves, and polar coordinates. Additional material of a theoretical, conceptual, computational, or modeling nature. Some
of the work may require more ingenuity than is required for MATH 166. Preference will be given
to students in the University Honors Program. Only one of MATH 151 or MATH 160, the sequence MATH 165-MATH 166, or the sequence MATH 181-MATH 182 may be counted towards
graduation.

In Class Activities:
This course will not be a typical math class. The amount of lecturing will be minimal, and you will
spend most of your time in class working on problems, asking questions, and presenting solutions.
You should expect to work on your own and in groups. The instructor will keep track of what you
do in class. This does not mean that your have to be perfect every single day (part of learning is to
get stuck and frustrated), but you are expected to attend class and put in an honest effort.
Challenge Problems:
Each week there will be one challenge problem that you must complete and hand in. Typically,
these will be posted on Monday and due a week later. One will be due during dead week.
Homework:
Homework assignments will be given each week using MyLabsPlus. There will be a homework
due during dead week.
If you have not used this before, here are some things you need to know: You will need an
access code, which is bundled with new textbooks; if you bought a used textbook, you will need
to buy an access code separately (the bookstore is probably the best deal). Once you have that,
your user name is your ISU Net-ID and your initial password is the last four digits of your
student ID number. You can change your password once you log in.
Quizzes:
Quizzes will be given in lecture each week that is not in the first week, dead week, or a week with
an exam, and calculators will not be allowed on quizzes.
Exams:
We will have two exams (tentative dates: 9/18 and 11/6) that will be held during lecture, and
calculators will be allowed on exams.
There will be a departmental midterm exam that will be given Wednesday October 7th at 8:15 PM
in Kildee 0125. There are two parts to the Midterm: one part with calculators not permitted
and one part with calculators permitted. More details will be given as we approach the exam.
There will a be a departmental final exam given during finals week. More information will be given
as we approach the exam date.
Calculators and Other Electronic Devices:
You may use any calculator that does not have wireless communication features, when permitted.
Other electronic devices may be used during lecture for educational purposes only. Since most
of our class will be participation oriented, I’d prefer that you place your attention on the
course and not on your cellphone/laptop/tablet/etc.
Disabilities:
If you have a documented disability that requires assistance, you will need to go to the Disability
Resource (DR) Office for coordination of your academic accommodations. The DR is located in
the Student Services Building, Room 1076. Their phone number is 515-294-6624. No retroactive
accommodations will be provided in this class.
Conduct and General Class Policies:
I expect all students to behave in a respectful manner during lecture, and you will be asked to
leave the lecture if you are being inappropriate and/or disruptive. Since there will be
student participation, I take this policy very seriously.
If you have to (legitimately) miss a lecture/quiz/exam, contact either the instructor or your teaching
assistant as soon as possible. You will have one week from the date of an assessment to
schedule a make-up, unless extenuating circumstances prevent you from doing so.
Missing the Midterm or Final is not allowed.
