Resources Use
Prior to beginning a reading assignment, review class notes.
A quick overview of reading material includes:
1. Reading chapter introduction and summary
2. Reading chapter test questions at end of chapter
3. Reading chapter and segment titles
4. Reading illustration captions, deciphering graphs, maps, and charts
Reading for the five Ws and How includes:
1. Rephrasing sentences, paragraphs, titles, captions, and the content of illustrations as questions: Who, What, When, Where, Why and How to broaden conceptual understanding
2. Reviewing chapter vocabulary & ask “who, what, when, why & how”
3. Stating facts in narrative form to illuminate characters, setting, time, conflict, and resolution of reading material
Using Resources to Enhance Reading Comprehension
1. Glossary of textbook (first mention principle)
2. Webster’s / Standard American Dictionary
3. Previous knowledge / Related term / Root words /examples
4. Matching / Noting references (written material &illustrations)
5. Support Network: PS tutors, faculty, librarians &classmates (exchange phone #s)
