Give life to a character. Thrill an audience. Make
children laugh. Pull a show together. Perfect your
acting chops or stage production skills through our
theatre courses. Work on- or off-stage. Perform in two
shows and two student showcases a season. Go to a
weeklong national festival with workshops hosted by
professionals. Join fellow students in community events
such as a traveling children’s troupe, festival show or a
bookstore Shakespeare performance. Theatre courses
develop confidence, communication and critical thinking
skills that are used in theatre and life.

WHY MCC-BLUE RIVER?
ART FOR ALL .
An arts education has many benefits. It enhances
test scores, attitudes, social skills and critical and
creative thinking. An arts education will improve
your ability to learn by drawing on a range of
intelligences and styles. Incorporating music, art,
theatre and creative writing into your studies will
help make your experience in school and in life
successful.
Great instructors. Our instructors know their craft inside out and how to teach it.
The right class size. Our class size averages only 24, assuring personal instruction.
Great value. Our tuition is only a third of what a four-year public institution charges, saving you
thousands of dollars. Private institutions cost even more. Also, because we’re close, you can live at
home and save even more. This low cost also gives you more freedom to explore classes.
Financial aid. MCC offers an amazing variety of funding options. Chances are good that if you
need the money, you can get it. Apply early though.
Support services. Tutoring, counseling, computer access, etc.—if you need help, we’re there.
Convenience. Our schedule fits your schedule. We offer day, weekend, evening and internet
classes.
Transfer potential. Start with the basics. Our program gives you a solid background with general
education requirements every four-year institution requires. More than half of MCC students go
for transfer degrees. They spend two years at MCC, then transfer credits to a four-year college or
university. They get incredible cost savings and the benefit of taking courses in smaller classes.
Develop exciting new characters. Create captivating
dialog. Compose a well-crafted poem. Put your heart
and soul into words with our creative writing courses.
You’ll study some of the great works in fiction, poetry,
plays, non-fiction and get the chance to produce
your own imaginative writing. You may also have an
opportunity to publish and display your work. Writing
courses teach you to think critically and express ideas.
MUSIC
Courses:
Music Appreciation
Evolution of Jazz
Music of the World’s Culture
Private Lessons (voice, piano, guitar, strings, winds and
percussion)
Heritage Philharmonic Orchestra
Spirit of Independence Band
Metropolitan Chorale of Kansas City
Blue River Jazz Band
Rebecca.Johnson@mcckc.edu
Sing out. Play a riff. Bring a crowd to its feet. Let your
musical talent soar with our vocal and instrumental
courses and private music lessons. Then take it to
another level by joining one of our many ensembles–for
credit!– of student/community members. Join a band or
audition for orchestra or chorale. You could play at the
Lyric Theatre, take a tour (the chorale went to Brazil)
or perform at other off- campus venues. The chorale
also has a show choir and a chamber ensemble. Music
courses promote creative thinking, reasoning skills and
memory.
