As of census date, MCC had 21,285 students fall 2011 and 20,236 students in spring 2012. The student
profiled is most likely to be female (59%), white (65%), traditional age (58%), and enrolled in an average
load of 9 credit hours per term. Most students are planning to transfer (65%), 15.5% are vocational and
19.5% are undeclared. 82% of MCC students are in-district living in one of 12 high school taxing areas
(see list below).

High School Penetration Rate
High School penetration is the percentage of a high school graduating class that enrolls in a college. The
national average for high school penetration is 25% with penetration rates higher for schools that are
closer to a community college. The chart also shows where high school graduates went the year after
graduating. The highest percentage of seniors attending a 2 year school comes from Blue Springs,
followed by Belton, Raytown and Independence. MCC’s portion of the 2 year rate is shown at the far
right. Note that 90% of the Lee’s Summit graduates that go to a 2 year college attend MCC.

General Population
The Kansas City Metropolitan Area population growth was varied by school district. The schools within or very close to Kansas City have shown a
drop in population. These include Center, Hickman Mills, Kansas City and Raytown. Others close to the city showed a small growth including
Belton, Grandview, Fort Osage and North Kansas City. The suburban schools Blue Springs, Independence, Lee’s Summit, and Park Hill had
significant growth in population.

County Demographics
Only Buchanan and Jackson counties have a higher rate of residents living in poverty than the Missouri
average of 14.6%. The lowest rate was Platte County with 6.2%. Jackson County has the highest
number of college students with 34,768 and Ray had the lowest with 554. Platte County has the highest
educational attainment with 91.8% of its population having earned a high school diploma. It also has
the highest percentage of its population with a bachelor’s degree 33.3%. Ray County has the lowest
educational attainment with only 79.3% of its population with an earned high school diploma and 10.8%
with a bachelor’s degree. Jackson has the lowest percentage of its population that speaks English at
home with 92.4%.

There is more of a range of median household incomes among cities rather than by county. The State of
Missouri median income is $45,229 so only Buchanan County is below the Missouri median. For
Missouri, the average household size is 2. All of the counties have a higher household size with the
largest in Cass (2.7). For Missouri, the median house value is $139,700 so four of the counties are below
the median (Buchanan, Jackson, Lafayette, and Ray).

Area Employers
The largest employers in the Kansas City Metropolitan area include HCA Midwest Health System, Sprint
Nextel Corporation, and St. Luke’s Health System, with 8,125, 7,300, and 6,620 employees, respectively.
Kansas City also serves as the headquarters for several major companies, including Hallmark Cards, H&R
Block, and AMC Entertainment. The manufacturing sector is a significant factor in employment in
Kansas City, although the sector’s share of total nonfarm payrolls declined from 11 percent in 1990 to
7.6 percent in 2010. General tors Company and Ford tor Company both have large auto bile
manufacturing facilities in the area.

The highest employment densities are highest in the following areas: Greater downtown,
midtown/Plaza, Country Club/Waldo, Truman Plaza, Heart of the City, Parts of Red Bridge and Swope,
and North Kansas City. Densities are lowest in Kansas City’s Northland neighborhoods, Eastern
neighborhoods, and Southern neighborhoods.
The heaviest travel flows are to and from Greater downtown, Midtown/Plaza, Country Club/Plaza, and
Heart of the City. Northland travel flows are oriented toward trips within the Northland than to areas
south of the river.

Delivery
The time of course attendance is another variable necessary to determine capacity. 42% of MCC’s
students are enrolled in day only classes. 30% are enrolled in a combination of day, evening/weekend,
and internet classes. Finally, 19% are enrolled exclusively in evening/weekend classes and 9% are
exclusively in distance education classes.
In Fall 2011, 18% of students were enrolled at 2 or more MCC location. The number of students
attending more than one MCC location increased from Fall 2007 to 2011 by 22 percent.
