SOLUTIONS OFFERING
From a single instrument to a complete package, Siemens is the
source you need. Our comprehensive portfolio covers everything
from pressure, temperature, flow and level measurement to valve
positioners, process controllers and process protection.
Positioner
Siemens valve positioners offer easy integration,
on-board diagnostic functions and minimum loss of
process air. Available for both linear and rotary valves,
Siemens positioners are universal—unlike the other
manufacturers‘—fitting all makes of valves.
SIPART PS 2
Level
Siemens provides the technology and
products you need for accurately measuring
liquids, slurries or bulk solids.

DIGITAL POSITIONER:
REPEATABLE AND ACCURATE
Flowmeters Installed With
Zero ShutDown
Challenge
A large power producer in the Northeast US operates on
demand. Plant efficiency and speed of response are crucial.
They were using an analog I/P and a pneumatic input
positioner that didn’t allow repeatable valve positioning in
manual mode, plus component “drifting” was occurring due
to environmental changes. Because of that, the plant
experienced a delay and a better solution was needed.
Challenge
A well-known New York power company needed a quick delivery
on a portable clamp on an ultrasonic flowmeter. They did not
want to shut down any lines while several of their in-house
meters were being sent out for upgrade and calibration.
Solution
The Siemens PS2 positioner was chosen as a replacement. It
allowed for repeatable accurate control in “manual mode.”
This device replaced both the analog I/P and the pneumatic
positioner, simplifying the control circuit and eliminating the
components that were “drifting.“
Solution
Siemens Sitrans FUP ultrasonic, clamp-on portable flowmeter
answered the call. It was configured to operate as a Dual Beam
flowmeter with two sets of universal D2 transducers for
maximum accuracy and utility. Installation was quick and
inexpensive without flow stoppage. The flowmeter performed so
well—in terms of accuracy and dependability—they rented
others and later decided to actually purchase all the units!

FLOWMETERS ON DAM MEETS STATE
ENVIRONMENTAL COMPLIANCE
Challenge
A power producer with both coal-fired and nuclear power
units was using bubbler level measurement systems to
monitor the tide level of their bar screens (used to
remove large objects from the water stream entering
their plant). The reliability of the screens was a major
issue. Also, the systems were maintenance intensive and
required a significant inventory of spare parts. A better
system was needed.
Challenge
A utility company in the US Pacific Northwest needed to
better regulate—and measure—the outflow of a large dam
built in the 1930s. Leaks in the outflow pipes could not be
detected, which could lead to a catastrophic break.
Additionally, the state government wanted to reintroduce
salmon into the river. Outflow measurements had to
become more accurate, and strict state environmental
compliances had to be met.
Solution
The Siemens HydroRanger 200 was the ideal solution.
Utilizing both a controller and ultrasonic transducer, the
HydroRanger 200 has no moving parts, and only two
components had to be stocked. Furthermore, the
ultrasonic technology does not contact the water. Cost
savings were realized in terms of reduced maintenance,
shelf space, inventory and time spent in calibration.
Solution
The Siemens SITRANS FUS1010 clamp-on ultrasonic
flowmeter was chosen to meet the challenges. Meters were
installed at the dam and powerhouse, and some had to be
installed over a 150-foot-deep gorge. To solve this unique
problem, Siemens went above and beyond by designing a
special mounting bracket. In the end, state compliance was
met, outflow measurement accuracy was increased, leaks in
the pipe were able to be detected and salmon are now
swimming in the river.
