ASSIGNMENT: Final Design Project DUE DATE: See Course Schedule. Submittals may occur at different times for different deliverables. LOCATION DUE: In Class EFFORT: Final Project Teams POINTS: 200 GRADING CATEGORY: Final Project DESCRIPTION: The design process is critical for an engineer. This project allows each team to explore the design process in detail from concept to final product. The engineering design process detailed in the course must be followed for this project. Problem Statement: The army seeks a detachable, fold-down seat for mounting inside an armored personnel carrier. The seat will be attached to mount points in a specified configuration within a specified utilizable space. A rifle mount and pack mount should be included as part of the single detachable seat unit. Design Statement: Students must develop their design statement. Constraints: 1. The seat must fit within the desired space and include the desired features. 2. The whole seat unit must be detachable via latch mechanism designed by the team, and the seat must be able to be folded up and down, and in folded configuration the entire unit must extend no more than 9” from the wall. 3. The seat must be able to support a maximum of 350 pounds placed at the outer edge of the seat. 4. The seat unit must contain a rifle mount. (Assume the rifle is a rod 3.5 feet in length and weighs 15 pounds.) 5. The seat unit must contain a pack mount. (Assume the pack is a rectangle 1.5’x1.5’x2’, and weighs 80 pounds.) 6. There are to be no floor or ceiling mount points. Students will develop additional constraints depending on their project. A minimum of three additional constraints is expected. Assumptions: 1. Any belts, straps, or buckles will be provided separately. The design should include mount holes/slots for any belts to be included, and the team should specify the type of belt, strap or buckle. 2. Assume any padding for the seat will be provided separately, but include mounting holes/slots for padding. 3. The material budget for the entire seat should be reasonable. Ignore labor cost. Deliverables: Use the design process to create a solution. You must create at least two preliminary designs and refine it down to one. 1. Prepare a notebook portfolio (one per team) with the contents noted below. This must be included in a professional three ring binder. You will get the project back after it is graded. 2. Prepare a presentation not to exceed fifteen minutes. All products (portfolio and presentations) must be created for an audience to include your instructor, fellow students, and additional MAE faculty or military representatives. Portfolio Contents 1. Cover Sheet/Title Page 2. Table of Contents with page numbers on EVERY page. 3. Dividers for each item. 4. Minimum of four pages, typed and double-spaced 12 point Times New Roman Font (1” margins), summary of the project requirements and your design process followed. This must include your design statement and constraints, justification of final design, recommendations, budget summary, and any additional pertinent information. 5. Neat, understandable hand sketches of the two preliminary designs. Include basic dimensions and labels where appropriate. 6. Inventor: Three-view drawings of each part with dimensions, assembly, balloon and parts list of the final design. 7. Electronically created Design Selection Matrix. 8. Electronically created GANTT chart, including itemized tasks and responsible parties. 9. Detailed cost estimate, including sources of materials. 10. Record of market research with one - two page summary of why your final design is different. The record of market research includes sources investigated, summary of source content, relevant information, etc. 11. A two-page, trifold-type flier advertising your design.
