SACS-COC Annual Meeting
Dr. Clayton Hess, Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs
- Planning and Accreditation (pictured left), recently attended
the 2009 Annual Meeting of the Southern Association of
Colleges and Schools’ Commission on Colleges (SACS COC). Dr.
Hess presented three roundtable discussions at the meeting,
which was held December 5-8, in Atlanta, GA.
His first roundtable discussion, was titled “Effective Strategic
Planning for Quality Improvement, and Mission Attainment.”
It explored how one institution integrated strategy planning,
assessment, budgeting and accreditation processes to ensure
continuing improvement and expansion of programs and
services. The second discussion, titled “Preparing for a Successful On-site Committee
Visit,” explored strategies used by one institution to prepare faculty and staff for on-site
visits. The same strategies and basic processes were used to prepare faculty and staff
for a Substantive Change Committee visit (for approval to offer more advanced-level
programs) and a separate Reaffirmation Committee visit. Both were successful and
resulted in no recommendations from either on-site committee. Dr. Hess’ last roundtable discussion, “Moving to Higher Ground: Program Initiation and Accreditation,” was a
discussion of each step involved in securing SACS COC approval of a new academic
program, or program at a more advanced degree level.
LMU’s Compliance Certification and the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), were used as
examples in the resource room during the meeting. The documents served as examples
for other institutions undergoing the reaffirmation process.

LMU Professors Meet With TWRA and Tennessee Tech
Drs. Caldwell, Copeland, Vanderpool, and Hoellman met recently with representatives
of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) and the Biology Department of
Tennessee Tech. TWRA and Tennessee Tech are responsible for a Habitat Conservation
Plan for the North Cumberland Mountain Wildlife Management Area (WMA). The meeting was held at the Powell River Aquatic Research Station. One topic of discussion was
animal species of concern within the WMA. The forests tracts protected within this
WMA in Campbell, Scott, and Anderson counties are some of the finest examples of
their type found on the northern Cumberland Plateau.
Also discussed with Dr. Caldwell, were research needs within the WMA, and the need
for an overall forest health monitoring plan for the entire WMA.

Foundation Corner
By Martha Scheidler, Director of Foundations
Rush, rush, rush! Doesn’t that seem like the way we feel the entire month of
December? Grant writing often feels like that. For those of you who have helped me
prepare grants, I’m sure you wonder why I push to get the proposal in way ahead of
deadline. First, I think program officers at foundations appreciate getting a proposal
early, so they can look it over and review it before the huge onslaught of proposals
hit their in-box. I believe this early-bird approach makes LMU look much more
professional. And second, I just hate feeling rushed!
I have great expectations for the coming year. I know this will be a wonderful and
productive year for all of you, and for LMU.
Congratulations to the following people for their work on grant proposals:
Dr. Sydney Beckman: Appalachian Community Fund
Dr. Jack McCann: The Smithfield Foundation and The Lynde and Harry Bradley
Foundation
Dr. Cindy Skaruppa, Robert Sabbatini and Donna Treece-Paul: The East TN
Foundation and the PeyBack Foundation
Dr. Curt Klinghoffer: The MacJannett Foundation
Ms. Cindy Hankins-Koppel and Ms. Christine Ramos: Target Foundation
Dr. Randy Evans and Dr. Mary Hatfield: Build-A-Bear Workshop Foundation
Mr. Martin Beller: Robert and Monica Cole Foundation
Mr. Jeff James: GE Healthcare
