Discoveries in Belize
Dr. Ron Caldwell recently returned from a trip to
Belize, Central America where he identified land
snails collected in litter bags in September.
Collecting litter is a standard technique for microsnails (LT 5mm) although it has it’s draw backs in
the jungle…scorpions, stinging ants, stinging plants
with very sharp spines, and very irritating
chemicals. This is part of the team research with
Dr. Adam Rollins and BFREE staff biologist Dan
Dr. Ron Caldwell in Belize.
Dourson. A Maya technician, Tom Pop, was
trained by Dr. Caldwell and made the
litter separations.
So far, 3-4 species new to science have been
found, and 7-8 new species occurrences have been
added to the jungle of Belize.

Streptostyla (pictured above, left) is the
oblong species and measures approximately 4mm high. The round Glyphyalinia
(above, right) is 2.2mm in diameter.
Dr. Rollins, Associate Editor for New Scientific Journal
Dr. Adam Rollins, Assistant Professor of Biology (pictured
left), has accepted an invitation to become an associate
editor of Mycosphere, a new online and print journal.
Mycosphere will provide rapid publication of taxonomic
and other articles in fungal biology, which includes
lichenology. As an associate editor, Dr. Rollins will be
responsible for the review process of article submissions.

Foundation Corner
By Martha Scheidler, Director of Foundations
The year 2010 is ahead of us. Challenged, scared, and hopeful are some of the
emotions I feel when contemplating the future. Certainly, as you look to your own
classes, programs, and projects you must wonder how or even if your plans will
become a reality.
Never fear! That’s what the staff of the ORGSP and University Advancement is all
about. We find ways to help you accomplish your goals and bring your projects
from the idea stage to reality. The aspect of my job that brings me much satisfaction is seeing an enthusiastic response to a grant opportunity, and the collaboration
with individuals all across our campus.
Congratulations to the following people for their work on grant applications or
letters of intent:
Dr. Michelle Heinan: Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation and The Chatlos Foundation
Dr. Mary Hatfield: Robert J. Kleberg and Helen C. Kleberg Foundation
Dr. Alan Biel: Muzak Heart and Soul Foundation
Ms. Mary K. Bowen-Reynolds and Dr. Chris Yonts: Pfizer Foundation and the Dr.
