Biography for Timothy R. Toland
A native of Caledonia, New York, Mr. Toland earned an
Associate’s degree in Landscape Development (1992) and a
Bachelor’s in Plant Science (1994) while at SUNY – Cobleskill,
and a Master’s in Landscape Architecture (1998) at SUNY –
College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse.
As a licensed landscape architect, Mr. Toland has practiced in Alexandria, Virginia,
Cleveland, Ohio and most recently in Charlotte, North Carolina. While in practice, he
worked on and led a number of project types, focusing on transit and urban planning, site
planning and detailed design for commercial and institutional projects, residential
community master plans, multi-family residential projects, urban streetscape design, and
garden design. Mr. Toland is also proficient in the utilization of computer systems and
graphics for a broad range of applications.
Joining the Faculty of Landscape Architecture in 2005 as an Assistant Professor, Mr.
Toland teaches the planting design and practice sequence to graduate and undergraduate
students, as well as construction materials and undergraduate senior design studios.
Mr. Toland’s scholarly focus in on applied sustainability, looking at the implications of
decisions made during the design process. The goal of his research is to improve the
economic and ecological sustainability of projects by providing the necessary information
to design professionals that will allow them to make informed decisions.
