Wagner Course Description: This course enables students to develop their understanding of basic concepts in biology, chemistry, earth and space science, and physics, and to relate science to technology, society, and the environment. Throughout the course, students will develop their skills in the processes of scientific investigation. Students will acquire an understanding of scientific theories and conduct investigations related to sustainable ecosystems; atomic and molecular structures and the properties of elements and compounds; the study of the universe and its properties and components; and the principles of electricity. Units of Study: Chemistry Physics Biology Earth and Space Science Atoms, Elements and Compounds The Characteristics of Electricity Sustainable Ecosystems The Study of the Universe Leading to: SNC2P (Grade 10 Applied) Assessment & Evaluation: Students will be assessed using a variety of ways that follow the four achievement categories: The term mark will be calculated as follows: Knowledge/Understanding Thinking/Inquiry Communication Application/Connections 30 % 30% 20 % 20 % The final mark will be calculated as follows: Term Work: Final Evaluation: 70 % 30 % Assignment Submission Failure to complete major assignments and/or unit tests could result in the credit being withheld. In order for a student to receive marks for an assignment, it must be completed by the due date set by your teacher. Students who do not submit assigned work by the due date will complete it at lunch or may be sent to the library to complete the assignment during class time. In either case, the assignment will be collected and graded, whether or not it is complete. Alternative assignments may be given at the discretion of the teacher. Attendance Regular attendance is essential to success in grade 9 science. All absences must be accompanied by an authorized note the first day back to class. If you are absent from class, it is your responsibility to catch up on any work missed. If you need help with work missed please set up an appointment so that we can meet outside class time. Plagiarism Plagiarism is the act of taking ownership of written material or ideas belonging to someone else, whether knowingly or unknowingly. At CWDHS, plagiarism is strictly dealt with. Please note that the submission of similar papers will result in consequences for all parties involved, regardless of who is the original author. Refer to the student agenda for specific guidelines or ask your teacher if uncertainty arises. Student Expectations: Participation and effort will be evaluated by observing your work habits, communication, skills and attitude Using class time wisely, completing assignments on time, completing homework punctually, keeping a well organized notebook, being prepared for class with all required materials Listening attentively, understanding and following instructions, verbalizing ideas clearly and concisely, and having all written work done both neatly and clearly. Accepting responsibilities, cooperating with others, sharing of tasks in group work, treating others with respect, and participating in class discussions.
