Students will learn about technical drawing, properties and preparation of materials, and manufacturing techniques. Student projects may include a robotic challenge, a design challenge, or a fabrication project involving processes such as machining, welding, vacuum forming, or injection moulding. Students will develop an awareness of environmental and societal issues related to manufacturing, and will learn about secondary and postsecondary pathways leading to careers in the industry. Term Work (70% of the final mark) Unit Title, Big Ideas, and Unit Culminating Tasks Unit 1: Safety By the end of this unit students will have an understanding of the shop safety rules and machine specific safety rules. Students will complete a written safety test as their culminating task. Unit 2: Measurement By the end of this unit students will have an understanding of imperial measurement and how it is applied to the manufacturing industry. Students will also learn the proper use of various measuring equipment ie. Tape measures, Vernier Calipers, Micrometers ect. Students will complete a written measurement test as their culminating task. Unit 3: Manufacturing By the end of this unit students will an understanding of the manufacturing sector and how to operate manufacturing specific machinery and tools. Ie Vertical and Horizontal band saws, lathes, drill presses ect. Students will complete a practical project for their culminating activity. Unit 4: Careers By the end of this unit students will have an understanding of the technology sector and the possible career paths that they could choose if they decide to pursue a career in the technology sector. Students will complete a careers research assignment as there culminating task. Culminating Tasks/Exams (30% or the final mark) Course Culminating Task/Exams and Description Students will complete a practical exam during the last 2 weeks of the course. Students will complete a reflection on their project during the exam day. Based on the range of students’ learning needs, a selection from the strategies listed below may be utilized. Refer to list of teaching and assessment strategies. Teaching Strategies: - Lessons will be presented using multiple forms of technology - Extra time will be given to all students in need of support - Students will be provided with feedback on all aspects of the course - Lesson materials will be available on the cloud and by email Assessment and evaluation strategies: - Students are assessed on a daily basis well working in the shop. Students are assessed by the use of formative assessment ie. Check lists, written quizzes, practical quizzes ect.
