This is a recommended supply list for art classes taught by Melissa Shatto. Painting Class Supplies If you choose to work in oils you will need the following supplies. If you choose to work in acrylics you will need the starred supplies plus a large jar for water. Paint: Windsor Newton and Grumbacher both have student grade and professional grade oil paint. Student paints will work fine and are less expensive. *Basics are a good, economical line of acrylics Recommended Colors * Ultramarine Blue * Cerulean Blue * Cadmium Red light or medium * Alizarin Crimson * Burnt Umber * Burnt Sienna * Yellow Ochre * Cadmium Yellow light or medium Viridian Green * Pthalocyanine Green * White - Titanium or Zinc Palette: There are some nice plastic palettes with lids that will keep paint workable longer, but you can also use any non-porous surface like a butcher tray, plate, wooden palette, piece of plexi-glass, or disposable palette. Get a large size to allow plenty of mixing room. Brushes: Look for brushes that are have a good, resilient spring to the bristles. Bend them over with your thumb and see if they resist a little and bounce back into shape quickly. I like the ones that look like they came from a badger or raccoon. Langnickel makes them, but there are several other manufacturers as well. They are harder than a sable and softer than a bristle. Some white and golden synthetic bristles work well, too. I recommend round brushes. One that is about 1/4 inch wide where the bristles enter the metal ferrule, then at least one bigger and one smaller. A variety of 5 different sizes should be fine. Canvas: It is best to start with a 16x20 canvas. There are also canvas boards, which can be OK to use if price is an issue but I don’t prefer them. Feel free to work a little larger but I don't recommend working smaller. Other supplies: * Palette knife - one with an angle bend like a trowel * Rags - old T-shirts work well, car rags, etc. Turpenoid (odorless) the one in the blue can Stand oil 2 small containers - mustard jars, small jam jars, etc. Liquin * A box to carry supplies - tackle box, art box, tool box, etc. * Masters Brush Cleaner
