Course Outline
CIS 110 - INTRODUCTION TO UNIX
Course Description:
This is an introductory course designed for users of UNIX. It is taught using the Linux
operating system. The student learns to create, remove, edit and rename files, directories
and subdirectories; compose, send, receive and print electronic messages; and compose,
edit and format short text files using the UNIX editors. The UNIX shell, kernel and utility
programs are covered. Shell programming is introduced.
Student Learning Objectives & Academic Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this course the successful student will be able to:
1) describe the function, organization and operation of the UNIX operating system
2) demonstrate the use of basic UNIX commands
3) demonstrate the use of redirection, pipes and filters
4) demonstrate competency in the use of the vi editor
5) describe the features of UNIX networks
