Brink, Dean for the U"to..f S.i.n""" J{ P 1985 Perfotanance Evaluation for Professor Herb Dershem Effectiveness as Teqgher and Advisor. Herb continued as one of Hope's premier breadth of courses including specialty @rkable sunrmer courses for high school teachers altd students, an introductory courge for non-majors atld courses at all 1evel6 for computer science end mathematics majors, His student evaluations in all of his coursee were excellent, g"iving tribute to his ability to effectively reach all levels of students who have as a group a broad range of interests and abilities. Hi.s student retings are high on aI aspects of his teaching. I have every reason to believe that he is equally effective as a student advisor. I rate his teechitg and advising perforuance in 1985 as excellent p1us. Herb continued to work in hi6 special area of professionatr Fffectiveness as Scholar. interest by attending two workshops otr artificial intelligence. He plans 10 continue to_ push forward to develop expertise in this area. Heavy involvement in creating, administeiing and teaching the new summer inetitute in coDputer science on top 6f his regular chairman's dutieo limited the time and energy that he could devota to scholarship. I rate his scholarship perfotmance as fair. Effectivgness in Service. Herb has a long history of service to Hope and to the colrmunity. He chairs the important computer service committee and has contributed his services to a nu$ber of ca$pus and community activities. I rate hi6 oervice as good plus. Effectiveness as Department Chairperson. Herb is an outstanding leader in hi6 capacity of chair of the computer 6ci.ence depart$ent. Hi.s faculty have high praise for his work as chair and I heartily co$cur. I value his good judge$ent b- all decisiong regarding the departDent that involve me. I rate hi6 effectivenes6 as chaii of the computer science depertment as excelleDt. Herb coDtinues to be a tremendous asset to Hope College. WarJ-449q941. (D), Service (S).
