City Parks has regularly upgraded Westridge Gardens over the years, but the park received a major boost in the previous financial year (2009/2010) when R200 000 was received from Urban Renewal Fund grant and R103 000 from ward allocations in ward 78. The Westridge Gardens is on the western side of Mitchells Plain, which is located about 20 km from the Cape Town city centre. It is one of South Africa's largest townships and Cape Town's largest with a population of about 1 500 000 people. City Parks staff came up with a brilliant idea to develop a Rose Garden. The project is now complete and the garden is in full bloom. This achievement was celebrated with the official opening of the Rose Garden on 19 April, 2011. Executive Mayoral Committee Member Mr Brett Herron and the local Ward Councillor Mr Grant Pascoe will be officiating at the proceedings. The Executive Mayoral Committee Member Cllr Brett Herron said “Westridge Garden is truly a model for transformation of a public park through the commitment and passion of the local staff of the City Parks department. The Gardens are beautiful, peaceful, well-kept and well utilised by the community and we can regard this park as a bench-mark for future improvement projects” The Director of City Parks, Ms Chantal Hanslo, said: “Westridge Gardens has long been the closest and most convenient public open space where residents of Mitchell’s Plain could share the joys of family picnics, take wedding pictures or simply get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The addition of a Rose Garden to this public open space will make it even more attractive. City Parks is extremely proud of the fact that Westridge Gardens is now one of Cape Town’s flagship facilities, specifically for the enjoyment of the people of Mitchell’s Plain.” The Westridge Garden has been undergoing continuous changes over the last few years. It has hosted popular annual events which include: summertime “Concerts in the Park”, the annual Mitchells Plain Festival, and many other activities. Rohland Williams, the Area Manager for City Parks, congratulated his team for working tirelessly toward creating a garden where residents can feel safe and relax in a clean, green environment, families can celebrate weddings, children can play and use skateboards safely. Mitchells Plain is located on the Cape Flats on the False Bay coast between Strandfontein and Khayelitsha. It was conceived of as a ‘model township’ by the apartheid government, and built during the 1970s to provide housing for coloured victims of forced removal due to the implementation of the Group Areas Act.
