President’s Message National Director’s Report As we approach another colorful Northeast fall most of us are engaging in the flurry of activity that precedes the snows. The school year is underway, industry is preparing next year's budgets and most everyone is taking care of odds and ends that slipped through the lazy summer days so we'll be ready for the busy holidays. It can be hard during this time to step back and consider why it is we do all of this. I hope that part of that consideration for you is a love of the geospatial sciences. When more than a third of one's waking hours go towards their career, it is a great joy to follow a path that one loves and finds intellectually stimulating. I find that most everyone I speak with in this field loves the work they do and enjoys advocating the field to others. With that in mind, my goal for this year is to build our student participation and that of our colleagues who are entering the work force. Please take some time out of your day to speak with those whom you mentor, and collaborate with, about the benefits of attending the CNY ASPRS meetings, the articles in PE&RS and the opportunity to see a wide spectrum of mapping applications in both. These people will be taking our field in new directions in the coming years building on the foundation we lay now and by joining ASPRS they will be included in a strong community of passionate leaders in the geospatial sciences. They will be able to engage in the decision making that will support future legislation, determine allocation of research monies and drive curriculum development. In a field that is quickly expanding into more and more daily applications, consider making this contribution so you will reap the benefits of the work from those who follow in our footsteps. Nearly forty years ago, the launch of Earth Resources Technology Satellite-1 (now known as Landsat 1) fulfilled William Pecora's vision for civilian spacebased observations of the Earth. Pecora 18 celebrates his vision with the theme "Forty Years of Earth Observations: Understanding a Changing World." The symposium focuses on how 40 years of Landsat and other Earth observation missions have influenced our understanding of the changing Earth, and contributed to improving information needed for managing our natural resources. Special emphasis will be given to the current state of the Landsat program such as the free data revolution and the upcoming launch of the Landsat Data Continuity Mission. Pecora 18 will be held in Washington, D.C area. on November 14-17. Items of interest for consideration on the national website: The LAS Working Group (LWG) of the ASPRS Lidar Division has released the draft proposal for version 1.4 of the LAS specification for comment. An annotated version of the LAS 1.4 proposal showing changes from the LAS 1.3 specification is also available. ASPRS has released draft “Guidelines for Procurement of Commercial Geospatial Mapping Products”. These materials are being published to encourage dissemination and comment. If you have comments on either document, please submit them to the links you will find on the website (www.asprs.org). There are two more webinars being offered in 2011: “Elements of Orthophoto Production”, and “Basic Principles of Spatial Data Analysis”. They are convenient, since you attend from your home or office, and are an exceptional value. We would like to hear your thoughts on the ASPRS, our region, and how we can better serve you. Please email any of the region officers with your ideas or see us at the next region meeting. Jennifer Barber John T. You would serve as Vice-President for one year and then move to President in year two. Your key responsibilities as P-E are to strengthen our membership, oversee the Region’s annual Students of the Year Awards, and act on behalf of the President in that person’s absence. The Secretary/Treasurer serves for one year and there is no requirement that this person be drawn from any particular sector. The primary duty of the Secretary/Treasurer is to maintain records for the Region, including minutes of meetings and financial records. This person receives and disburses Region funds, supervises fiscal activities, submits interim and annual fiscal reports to the Region and coordinates the submittal of an annual Region Report to National ASPRS. Serving the region brings great networking opportunities all the way through to the national level. It also provides technical enlightenment and is a service to the industry. Nima was born and raised in Tehran, Iran. Last year’s Student of the Year, he is currently studying under Dr. John Schott as a doctoral candidate in Imaging Science at Rochester Institute of Technology. His aspiration is to conduct novel research in remote sensing. “Spatial Analyses of Forest Consolidation Dynamics in the Conterminous U.S.” will be Presented by Sheng Yang, an ERE Ph.D. Student. This talk will present a novel technique for assessing forest changes at the national level. More specifically, spatial patterns of forest changes, as observed from NLCD in 1992 and 2001, are of interest. Significant consolidation patterns have been identified with the overarching goal to assist forest management decisions at the national level. “Developing Confidence Metrics for Remote Sensing Classifiers” will be presented by Dr. Giorgos Mountrakis. An important step in supervised classification is the selection of the training dataset. This talk will present a method for training data selection and the corresponding implications in classification accuracy. The underlying idea is that as the representativeness of the training data to the overall scene increases so does the classification accuracy. Dr. Giorgos Mountrakis is an Assistant Professor in Environmental Resources Engineering at SUNYESF. His areas of expertise include environmental monitoring using remote sensing methods, environmental modeling using geographic methods, and environmental decision systems.
