President’s Message
National Director’s Report
Hello Central New York ASPRS members,
Have you ever had someone’s eyes glaze over when
you tried to explain what you do for a living? Not
anymore – check out the “Geospatial Revolution” at
http://geospatialrevolution.psu.edu. It is a project by
Penn State Public Broadcasting that is being
sponsored by several organizations in our community,
including the ASPRS Foundation. I just watched
Episode 1 and it was excellent, with interesting
content and the highest quality production values. So
the next time someone asks, you can point them to this
site, or use Facebook, or Twitter or even an email.
At our last meeting of the officers, we charted our
goals for the year. These goals are focused on giving
value to you, our members.
Our CNY ASPRS 2010 – 2011 goals are:
1) Increase Networking within our Region
-Social network – the Connection of people
-The person
-The professional affiliation
-Business network (employer listing…where
are the jobs?)
Two interesting ASPRS webinars are coming up:
“Preparing for ASPRS Certification” in late October,
and an “Orthophoto Workshop” in early December.
As I have mentioned in the past, the webinars are very
informative and easy to participate while in your
office or from home. The web aspects work very well
with clear visuals and audio. If the topics are of
interest to you, I think it will be worth your while to
sign up.
2) Keep our members current on the Community:
GIS,
remote
sensing,
mapping,
and
photogrammetry
-Government
-Education
-Industry
3) Make people’s work lives easier (e.g. ArcGIS
pointers)
I will be going to the ASPRS/CaGIS 2010 Specialty
Conference in Orlando, 15-19 November. The theme
is
Geospatial
Data
and
Geovisualization:
Environment, Security, and Society. It is being held in
conjunction with a special joint meeting of ISPRS
Technical Commission IV and AutoCarto 2010, so
there will be allot of content for those who can go.
-Passing on practical learning to one another
4) Working toward being the Region of the Year
-Quality/content (points) of annual report. Much of
the points focus on increasing our membership
Our plans thus far:
In addition to the board meeting, I will be attending a
workshop on sensor networking and the Membership
Committee meeting.
CNY ASPRS will be supporting the NYS GIS
conference Oct 25-27 in Saratoga. It promises to be
an exciting conference. We are planning a fantastic
visual in the CNY ASPRS booth. Please stop by the
booth and bring a friend to introduce them to ASPRS.
On the topic of membership, the region officers have
been discussing how ASPRS can bring more value to
its members on the regional and national level. We
would like to hear your thoughts on what is providing
the most value now—the journal, the website, the RSS
feeds, Twitter—and what you would like to see in the
future. Please email me with your ideas and I will
bring them forward at the conference.
The region will be sponsoring two meetings during
the year, one possibly in partnership with IEEE. This
will grow our network and give exposure to other
technical areas. We will also be targeting increased
student engagement. Our first steps toward this will
be the placement of a student on our advisory board.
John T. Boland, CP
I hope many of you participated in the recent survey
of the industry by our society. (see President, pg 2)
1
(President, from pg 1) Data was collected in many areas
of concern and those of possible growth. These results
should be reviewed against the capabilities of our
region and can act as a guide for enhancement to the
constituency. Of key interest was the focus on
education, a key strength for us in Central NY. The
results should be out this winter and a focused review
in the region should be planned.
I look forward to a year of renewed connectivity and
growth, and welcome your thoughts and suggestions.
To our future,
Joan Mondello

GRADE POINTS
ASPRS AWARDS & SCHOLARSHIPS
ASPRS grants awards and scholarships, valued to
over $50,000, to qualifying graduate and
undergraduate students.
The 2011 ASPRS
scholarships and awards brochure is now available
for distribution. Recently, very few applications
have been submitted for some of the awards and
scholarships. In additional, several new awards
have been introduced in past couple of years. A
few of these scholarships are highlighted here.
The Francis H. Moffitt Memorial Scholarship has
increased to $4,000, a $1,000 increase over the
2010 grant. This award is designed to encourage
upper-division undergraduate and graduate level
students to pursue a course of study in surveying or
photogrammetry leading to a career in the
geospatial mapping profession.

Episode 1 of “The Geospatial Revolution Project” is now Online
ASPRS, the ASPRS Foundation, and individual
ASPRS members have been heavily involved in the
evolution of The Geospatial Revolution Project,
working with Penn State Public Broadcasting to
help identify topics to cover, people to interview,
and potential funding sources. “ASPRS, working
through the ASPRS Foundation, is very proud to be
associated with this important effort, which grew
out of an earlier proposal to document the history of
photogrammetry and remote sensing in the U.S.”
said James Plasker, ASPRS Executive Director.
“The original proposal, developed by ASPRS
Fellow Member Dr. Alan Voss, was extremely
powerful in concept, but needed the professional
oversight of an experienced film production team;
the group assembled by Penn State is outstanding,
and the project concept has since evolved under
their leadership to a landmark outreach opportunity
for all of the geospatial science community.”
Episode 1 of the Penn State Public Broadcasting’s
(PSPB) four-part online video series, The
Geospatial Revolution Project, is now available at
Penn State Public Broadcasting’s website,
http://geospatialrevolution.psu.edu. The 13-minute
episode, which is divided into four chapters, begins
with an overview and moves into how GPS works.
Following a brief history of the evolution of
mapping, the episode wraps up with the practical
and human application of crisis mapping and
“crowd sourcing,” using the earthquake in Haiti as a
case study.
According to PSPB, “The mission of The
Geospatial Revolution Project is to expand public
knowledge about the history, applications, related
privacy and legal issues, and the potential future of
location-based technologies.” The remaining three
episodes, to be released over the next five months,
will cover topics on geospatial applications, privacy
and legal issues, civic engagement, and more. It is
expected that K-12 teachers and post-secondary
educators will use these films in the classroom to
help explain the location-based technologies and
applications that influence our lives.
Sponsors of The Geospatial Revolution Project
include: the ASPRS Foundation, Booz Allen
Hamilton, DigitalGlobe, ESRI, GeoEye, Harris,
National
Geospatial-Intelligence
Agency,
NAVTEQ, and Northrop Grumman.
