First furnace transformer from Wuhan Test of the first Siemens special transformer made in China successfully completed siemens.com/energy/transformers The first furnace transformer manufactured at the Siemens transformer plant in Wuhan, China, recently passed its final test. The test procedure took eight months and was performed with the support of the Global Technology Center (GTC). The transformer, which will be used at a new steel plant, is the first of its type to be made in China. Very few manufacturers in the world have the design expertise for this type of special transformer, which delivers a very high current to melt steel. The technical development of the furnace transformer took place in Germany, and several experts from Germany came to Wuhan and provided advice during the key project execution steps, from the auditing and selection of local suppliers to the complex manufacturing and testing process. The customer expressed great satisfaction with the sophistication of the Wuhan plant. After the initial successes in 2013 with static VAR compensators (SVCs) and a transformer with an environment-friendly synthetic ester oil insulation, the furnace transformer just completed is another milestone. It provides a solid foundation for the further development of special transformer manufacturing at the Wuhan plant.
