Great performance: extraordinarily powerful transformer passed test Siemens Transformer Co., Ltd (STCL) recently produced the world’s most powerful 500-kV single-phase auto transformer. It boasts a capacity of 1,500 MVA and was manufactured for Shanghai-based utility SGCC’s Hongyang power distribution project. Specially designed and built for underground installation, the transformer meets complex and demanding requirements in terms of cooling and mechanical design. The insulation level specifications of the new transformer, for instance, exceeded that of an average 500-kV transformer by 10 percent, and the impedance can reach 22 percent. Such parameters result in strict requirements in terms of insulation design, magnetic leakage, and loss minimization control. To ensure the reliable operation of the transformer and to meet its outstanding cooling demands, STCL also designed a precisely matched, advanced water cooling system. Having successfully passed the required technical testing procedures, the transformer underlines STCL’s strength in the production of technically demanding high-quality transformers along with transformers for the Shanghai Expo substation and the Beijing Yuanda substation. It is another proof of STCL’s leading position in the area of underground transformer technology. STCL has accumulated abundant technical experience since its foundation in 1994. Thanks to its strong technical performance, the factory became Siemens’ only nonEuropean transformer design hub worldwide.
