On-site transformer repairs
in the Middle East
The Siemens transformer service unit, which is part of
Transformer Lifecycle Management® (TLM), once again
put its performance to the test while repairing a transformer for a Middle East petrochemical company. The
64-MVA 220/20-kV transformer was repaired on the customer’s premises, avoiding the need for time-consuming
and expensive transport to the manufacturer’s factory in
Germany.
Following the diagnosis of a defective winding on the
affected transformer, the customer ordered three new
sets of windings from Siemens and then placed the order
to install and recommission the transformer on-site. Time
was an important concern, beginning with the contract
award, because the failure of the feeding transformer in
an industrial plant brings production to a standstill and
incurs high follow-on costs. The customer therefore
scheduled a maximum of 36 calendar days from the time
the transformer was taken out of service until it was
brought back on line. TLM Nuremberg worked with
Siemens Middle East to evaluate the options for on-site
repair, and the closest repair factory was brought on
board through a collaboration agreement. The concept
that Siemens TLM ultimately submitted won over the
customer on all points.
The winding sets were to be supplied from the transformer factory in Dresden, while the installation and
commissioning work would be performed by local staff
and TLM employees from Nuremberg. TLM Nuremberg
assumed overall responsibility for the project.
Thanks to the excellent planning and extensive expertise
of the employees involved, the dedication of the supervisors from Germany, and the great teamwork of the local
Siemens personnel, all of the work was completed with
impressive speed. The entire repair, from disassembling
Inserting the repaired active part into the transformer housing
the transformer to acceptance by the customer, was
completed in just 24 days; the entire retrofit, from taking
the transformer out of service to bringing it back on line,
took 34 calendar days. As a result, the planned project
duration, which was extraordinarily short to begin with,
was reduced by two days.
The customer was delighted with the quality as well as
the remarkable speed of the repair.

Markus Biller, who heads TLM in Nuremberg, also praised
his team’s impressive performance. “Our people fulfilled
the order at top speed, literally working day and night.
The fact that we have received additional orders confirms
this success. A repair of this scope makes the transformer
ready and able to perform for the next 30 years.”
After final acceptance: The transformer is ready for another
30 years of operation
