COURSES PREPARED
World Regional Geography A lower-division course that provides an introduction
to basic geographical concepts. The course examines elements of physical,
cultural, historical, economic, and political geography within eight world regions.
Introduction to Human Geography A lower-division course that introduces subdisciplines of human geography through lecture, slide shows, the Internet, writing
exercises, and group “field” projects. Students investigate in-depth case studies
that show how geography shapes the political, social and economic processes
of the world around us.
Population Geography An upper-division/graduate course that examines
population processes and patterns of mortality, fertility, and migration in a
contemporary, international geographic setting. The class combines lectures,
exercises, and discussions.
Inequality USA An upper-division/graduate course that provides a geographical
approach to understanding how and why inequality exists in the United States.
Students learn how social geographers study various spaces, which include
individuals, groups, neighborhoods, communities, organizations, institutions,
governments, and states, to understand how they become both products and
producers of inequality.
Mega-Cities An upper-division/graduate-level seminar that provides a global
perspective on the nature of urbanization, the forces behind these patterns, and
their effects on the social, political, economic, and environmental organization
and governance of the world’s largest mega-cities.
Silverton Field Experience An upper-division/graduate-level field course that
focuses on Silverton, Colorado’s cultural and physical landscapes. Participants
select an overarching, central question related to the fieldsite and develop a
research project based on that question.
16
Race, Ethnicity, and Place An upper-division course that provides students with a
perspective concerning the dynamics and processes of racialization in varying
U.S. urban contexts. The class emphasizes discussion, as well as learning the
methods utilized by geographers in exploring race, ethnicity, and place.
Global Migration An upper-division/graduate-level seminar that outlines how
international migration has become a major factor in economic, political, and
cultural change. Current themes such as transnationalism, citizenship, and the
sociospatial consequences of migration are discussed and critiqued by students.
