The American Advertising Federation‐Black Hills (AAF‐BH) will host the third annual Student Design Jam. The
Jam lets fresh, young talent compete in a free‐style battle that whittles nine designers down to a final face‐
off of three in front of a live audience. After three rounds, the reigning winners will go head‐to‐head for the
title of champion. The first three rounds feature three students each who compete to create the best design
in just 10 minutes for an assigned creative brief using the same elements, fonts and photos. The panel of
judges then has three minutes to determine a winner from each round to move on to the final championship
battle. This event is FREE and open to the public! Everyone is sure to have a good time.

Cyber Threat Awareness
With school in full session this usually means additional stress and anxiety in our day‐to‐day lives. We often
find ourselves studying, grading, taking advantage of nice weather, and spending valuable time with family
and friends before the frigid air makes its way down. Unfortunately, during stressful times there is a
significant increase in cyber threats. IMPORTANT! Please remember to think twice about the validity of
emails, Facebook/Twitter/Pinterest posts, phone calls, and pop‐ups you receive related to, but not limited to
the following:
 Incredible, outrageous, amazing, or once‐in‐a‐lifetime
 Shopping order status
 Advertisements for popular stores
 Shipment status
 Account change information
 Usernames and password changes and lockouts
 Problems with your bank account
 Changes in billing information
 Backordered items
 Email upgrades and size limits
 Computer viruses/malware
deals
Added stress often contributes to falling victim to these attacks. Typically through phishing emails, online
advertisements, and phone calls, malicious attackers corner us, use scare tactics, provide misleading
information, and influence us to follow their directions. Let’s keep this year free from identity theft,
credit/debit card theft, account compromise, and malicious software. Stay alert and stay aware of cyber
threats. Thank you and I hope you have a successful semester! Don’t forget to follow us on

Geek Speak ‐ Dr. Tim Steckline's "Outgrowing Optimism"
Oct. 22 | 4:00pm | Jonas 110
Trying to convince a roomful of adults that they can count on Santa Claus would be risible, so long as no still‐
enchanted children are in the room. But tell a group of full‐grown Americans that they can dream their way to
prosperity or self‐fulfillment or health, and they will fork over their cash and, worse, their hearts. Candid
indeed. Political commentator Barbara Ehrenreich's 2009 book Brightsided took up the gauntlet in the crusade
against optimism after she was exposed to the positive‐thinking protocols that accompany cancer treatment
these days. She felt infantilized by the onslaught of pink ribbons and teddy bears, and yearned to return to
being an adult. This American curse can be traced back to Ralph Waldo Emerson if you will, or perhaps the
dual threats of the 1920s, Aimee Semple McPherson and Dale Carnegie. Now The Secret can rake in followers
via dvd, print, public motivational speakers, or group interaction. Little Orphan Annie promises us that
tomorrow is only a day away. Our horrific news reports end with an upbeat invitation to rejoin them when
things have gotten even better tomorrow. Politicians build their campaigns around positive thinking, so kindly
President Reagan sees morning in America, and Bill Clinton enters stage‐right to his theme song, courtesy of
Fleetwood Mac, "Don't Stop Thinking about Tomorrow." In the past decade some psychologists have been
finding in positive thinking a motive force worth studying as behavioral and material. This critique of the
scourge of Optimism will posit that (a) there is no good reason for positive thinking, and (b) there are at least four reasons for avoiding this immature practice. As an improvement, Realism will be
advocated: setting goals and deploying means and adjusting means to feedback data. Questions will be
invited.
