What is National TRIO Day #3
Student Leadership Event
The TRIO Program is available to assist students who are first‐generation in college, OR income‐eligible students (based on taxable
income guidelines for their family size), OR students with a disability that could affect their academic success.
Jessica, a 2nd‐year student, talks about her involvement with TRIO. “The most amazing part about being in TRIO was when I got the
Student of the Month award. (SSS) said I received the award because I was responsible, showed initiative, asked questions, and put
energy into my learning. It really gave me the affirmation I needed to know that I was doing good in school, that I was surviving, and
that it was going to be possible for me to earn my degree.”

Geek Speak in the Library!
Form Partnership with
Triathlon
This week's Geek Speak featuring Dr. Martin Fashbaugh will be held in the E. Y. Berry Library and Learning Center. Join us at 4:00 on
Thursday for “Preaching to the Nerves Instead of the Judgment”: The Victorian Sensation Novel.
FB: Petrino Resigns as
Special Teams Coordinator
As a real or perceived threat to class divisions, social mores, and rigid gender roles, the English literary establishment saw the
Victorian Sensation Novel of the 1860s (by authors such as Ouida, Charles Reade, Ellen Price, Mary Elizabeth Braddon, and Wilkie
Collins) as an ideological threat. This lecture will go over this genre’s characteristics, the historical conditions contributing to its
popularity, its influence on so‐called “serious” Victorian fiction, and its lasting influence on Western culture. For example, with its
romantic triangles, adulterous relationships, melodramatic circumstances, snobbish upper‐class characters, and attractive villains,
the Sensation Novel produced the archetypes for the present‐day television soap opera.
SB: BHSU Comes up Short
Against Dustdevils
My presentation intends to challenge students’ perceptions of Victorian literature and culture as stuffy and highly moralistic while
also helping them to appreciate the Sensation Novel’s enormous impact on contemporary pop culture.

11, and 25, Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. each evening. The film series is free and open to the public. They will be held at BHSU in the Jonas

The films are classics from the 1940s and 50s film noir movement. The movies scheduled are:

The Big Read in Spearfish is presented in partnership with The Matthews, Grace Balloch Memorial Library, Black Hills State University,

& 50s has had a huge influence on modern art, even beyond filmmaking. We are excited to share this piece of history with the people
of our community and we are grateful to Black Hills State for helping make this event possible. The Big Read in Spearfish is really a
“big” collaboration and we are pleased to be working with so many outstanding groups.” says Ava Sauter, Community Outreach
Manager for The Matthews Opera House and Arts Center. A program of the National Endowment for the Arts, The Big Read broadens
our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. Managed by Arts Midwest,
this initiative offers grants to support innovative community reading programs designed around a single book.
Spearfish is one of 75 communities nationwide participating in The Big Read from September 2015‐June 2016. From Jan. 2016‐Mar.
2016, our community will celebrate Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon with a full calendar of events. View a full calendar of
