(SSS) said I received the award because I was responsible, showed initiative, asked questions, and put energy into my learning. It really gave me the affirmation I needed to know that I was doing good in school, that I was surviving, and that it was going to be possible for me to earn my degree.” ‐‐Submitted by Susan Hupp‐ 2‐16 Friday, Feb. 19 BH Night at Rush Hockey Open House Check out these events and more on the Campus Calendar YELLOW JACKET NEWS International Writing Jam In celebration of International Writing Centers week, the Writing Center, English Club, and ISO will be hosting a creative writing event focused on capturing places around the world. Form Partnership with Triathlon This week's Geek Speak featuring Dr. Martin Fashbaugh will be held in the E. Y. Berry Library and Learning Center. Join us at 4:00 on Thursday for “Preaching to the Nerves Instead of the Judgment”: The Victorian Sensation Novel. FB: Petrino Resigns as Special Teams Coordinator As a real or perceived threat to class divisions, social mores, and rigid gender roles, the English literary establishment saw the Victorian Sensation Novel of the 1860s (by authors such as Ouida, Charles Reade, Ellen Price, Mary Elizabeth Braddon, and Wilkie Collins) as an ideological threat. This lecture will go over this genre’s characteristics, the historical conditions contributing to its popularity, its influence on so‐called “serious” Victorian fiction, and its lasting influence on Western culture. For example, with its romantic triangles, adulterous relationships, melodramatic circumstances, snobbish upper‐class characters, and attractive villains, the Sensation Novel produced the archetypes for the present‐day television soap opera. SB: BHSU Comes up Short Against Dustdevils My presentation intends to challenge students’ perceptions of Victorian literature and culture as stuffy and highly moralistic while also helping them to appreciate the Sensation Novel’s enormous impact on contemporary pop culture. ‐‐Submitted by Courtney Huse Wika ‐ 2‐13 Be 1 of the 2%: Join the New Honors Program The University Honors Program invites applications for its new competitive program emphasizing undergraduate research and creative activity.
