Newsletter for January, 2012
From the Principal’s Desk
On behalf of the staff at Kortright Hills
Public School, I would like to wish all of
our parents, guardians and students a
very happy and healthy holiday season.
We hope that everyone has an opportunity to enjoy
the company of family and friends during the
holiday. Please accept our sincere thanks for all of
the support that we have received over the past
year. We greatly appreciate all that has been done
to assist the students and staff at our school. A
special thank you to our School Council members for
all of the work that they continue to do on behalf of
our students. Best wishes for a healthy and
prosperous new year.
We look forward to seeing everyone on Monday,
January 9th, 2012

Holiday Greetings from the Library!
Our December Book Fair was a fantastic success!
Thanks to everyone who supported our literacy fundraiser. We earned almost $3000 in Scholastic
credits that we will use to purchase books,
magazines, and literacy programs for our library and
classrooms. A special thank you to the students and
parents who volunteered their time to help with the
set-up, Family Fun Day, and the clean-up. I couldn't
have done it without you! I hope everyone is
enjoying their new books.
KOBO e-readers have arrived at Kortright! Our
library now has eight KOBO e-readers for students
in Grades 4 - 8 to sign out for a one week borrowing
period. Each KOBO is loaded with a variety of
novels, and students are welcome to
request specific books or series.
Students must have a permission form
signed before they may borrow a
KOBO. If your child is interested,
forms are available in the library.
The KOBOs are very popular, so we do have a waiting
list... please be patient!
Have you had a chance to visit our library website?
The website contains lots of information about
upcoming library events, new books, book clubs,
Forest of Reading, and the KOBOs. I am looking for
student book reviews of favourite books that are in
our library. Please email them to me so that I can
edit and upload them to our website. More
information is available on the "Book Reviews" page.
The Forest of Reading programs will be starting in
January. Kindergarten - Grade 2 students will be
involved in the Blue Spruce program and will be
listening to 10 nominated picture books and voting
for their favourite. Students in Grades 3 - 8 will
have the opportunity to participate by reading at
least 5 nominated books as part of Silver Birch
Express (Grade 3 -4), Silver Birch (Grade 5 - 6), or
Red Maple (Grade 7 - 8). Book conferences will be
held weekly with staff members and voting will take
place later in the spring. You can find all
of the books listed on the library
website, with a summary of each.
Encourage your child to listen for
announcements in January if he/she is interested in
participating!
I hope everyone finds the time to relax with a good
book over the holidays!

Reading Tip - Encourage Questioning
Inclement Weather
Questioning makes reading fun. But to know how to
question, your child needs to hear your questions
first. This is not about asking your child questions,
instead, it’s about modeling what it means to be
curious by sharing questions you have while you read.
Don’t rush to the answers right away; let the
questions hang in the air. Pose several questions and
then let your child take a turn asking questions that
come to his/her mind. You’re showing your child how
to be an active player in the world of reading
It is the parents’ responsibility to
determine whether or not it is safe for
his or her child to leave for school in
inclement or severe weather. A parent must be
aware of the following:
• When a bus does not travel a route in the
morning due to fog, ice, or snow conditions, it
will not travel that route in the afternoon.
• While we have an excellent transportation
system, buses may be delayed in the morning
due to traffic, poor road conditions,
mechanical
breakdowns, etc.
To ensure your child is not
stranded at his/her pick-up
point; please make sure they
know what to do and where
to go if their bus is more
than 15 minutes late.
Listen for messages on your local radio station for
the City of Guelph - Yellow Card.
Bus/Taxi Cancellations
During times of inclement weather, please listen to
our local radio stations: 1460 AM
CJOY, 106.1 Magic FM or 900 AM
CHML, 107.9 FM CJXY, Oldies 1090
AM, 105.3 FM CHYM, 1150 AM
CKOC, 102.9 FM CKLH, 820 AM
CHAM, CKCO-TV for school transportation
cancellations. Information on bus/taxi cancellations
and school closures are also posted on the Upper
Grand District School Board’s website:
www.ugdsb.on.ca.
If your child(ren) regularly travel(s) by bus, parents
do not need to inform the school
when the buses are cancelled. If,
however, your child(ren) regularly
walk to school, you are asked to
leave a message on the 24 hr
attendance line (519 827-1601 ext. 200) for any
absence or late arrival.
PLEASE NOTE: On days when buses/taxis are
cancelled, unless otherwise informed, the school will
be open and a regular school program will be offered.
Also, if parents of bus students drive their
child(ren) in the morning, they must also pick them
up at 3:20 p.m.
Christmas Food Drive
Thank you to everyone who contributed to our
Christmas Food Drive. We didn’t have a total by
printing time, but if the amount of food in the hall is
any indication, then Kortright Hills families were
wonderfully helpful and giving.
Buzu Village Project
Thank you to everyone who contributed to our Candy
Gram Sales. We raised $443.70. for the Buzu
Project.
Well Done!
Kindergarten Registration
Kindergarten Registration will take place the week
of February 6-10, 2012. To register
for junior kindergarten
your child must be
four years old on or
before December
31st, 2012.
To register for senior
kindergarten (if your child is new to our school)
he/she must be five years old on or before
December 31st, 2012. If you can’t register during
this week, please call the school office at
519 827-1601 to arrange an alternate time. You
must bring your child’s birth verification and his/her
immunization record to register.
Lost and Found ????????
Our lost-and-found box is once again collecting
numerous lost items of clothing etc., etc and we are
only days away from it being emptied. Please take a
moment to check the items in the box. You may be
surprised at what you find! Please put name labels in
your child’s clothing - it really helps!!
All items not claimed from the lost and found will be
taken to the Salvation Army on December 23rd.
Indoor Shoes
Parents are asked to ensure that all students have
indoor shoes (or running shoes). With the
wet weather outside, it is inevitable
that the floors will occasionally be
wet.
Not only is it unhealthy and dangerous for students
to walk around the floors of the school in socks,
students will not have a chance to change into their
footwear if there is a fire alarm or a drill.
Extra Clothes
Now that our weather is turning considerably colder,
it is a good idea to send along some extra
clothes with your child. An extra pair of
dry socks and an extra pair of mittens
are always good things to
have tucked into the
backpack
Snacks
Thank you for helping keep the school safe for all
students by sending lunches and
snacks that are peanut/nut free.
Most parents/guardians send
nutritious snacks for the children
to eat. Please carefully monitor
what your child brings to school for
snacks and lunch. Some students bring items that
have a very high content in sugar or chocolate.
Often these ingredients affect children by making it
difficult for them to sit long enough or have the
ability to concentrate and complete academic tasks.
Please save the items high in sugar until the children
are at home when they have the ability to run off
the extra energy given by such foods.
Head Lice Watch
Winter is the time of year when head lice is most
common in our school. To try to keep it under
control, we ask parents to periodically check their
children’s hair and inform the school if head lice are
found.
School Council News
Thanks to all the families
who turned out for Family
Fun Day on December 3rd.
The event was very well
attended and judging by
all the smiles, a good time
was had by all! A special
thank you to everyone who volunteered, donated
baked goods &/or raffle items. As a result of the
day’s success, we are pleased to announce that $1140
has been donated to Camp Trillium, a childhood
cancer support centre. In
addition, $375 has been
donated to families in our
community, needing some
assistance during the holiday
season. We should all be
proud of being a part of such a special event, and
bringing a bit of happiness to some who are less
fortunate than ourselves.
Do you have a New Year’s resolution to get more
organized? Mabel’s Labels is an ongoing fundraising
initiative for the school. Please visit the school’s
personal website: www.kortrighthills.mabel.ca to
place your order.
The next council meeting is scheduled for Monday,
January 16th at 7:00 pm in the school library.
Everyone is welcome!
Post-Dated Cheques for the Food
Programs
Please be advised that the
second installment of
cheques for the
food programs
will be cashed on or around
January, 9th, 2012.
