NEWSLETTER
September 2013 - Issue 1
Sheri MacKenzie,
Office Co- Ordinator
From the Principal’s Desk…
One of the joys of living in Canada is the changing seasons and we are anticipating a wonderful
fall. A very warm welcome back to all of our students and their families. The teachers have
been busy getting ready for an exciting learning year ahead!
Over the summer Mrs. Kucyla announced her retirement. Now she will have time every day to
spend with her family and friends. Mrs. Kucyla has been a constant over the years for many
people, and she will be missed. Happy retirement Mrs. Kucyla!! In her place we were
fortunate to hire Ms. MacKenzie. Ms. MacKenzie is very excited to join us and to
become a part of our school community. Please say hi when you are in the school!
We are also pleased to welcome back Mrs. Cyr, who has been away on maternity
leave enjoying time with her children! Also new to the staff is Ms. Barnes, who will be our
educational assistant for the year.
Lunch Supervisors Needed
We are in need of 1 lunch supervisor on Tuesdays; 2 on Thursdays and 2 on
Fridays. This position pays $11.00 for the hour 11:40 am - 12:40 pm. It is
a great way to become involved in your child’s education and to get some
fresh air at the same time. Please contact Mrs. Plazek for more
information.
Interested in a JK/SK or grade 1 French Immersion program for September 2014?
Read on…
Do you have a child who will be 4, 5 or 6 years old in 2014? The Upper Grand District School
Board will provide JK-Gr. 1 French Immersion at a school in Rockwood in September 2014, but
only if a sufficient number of children are enrolled. Early registration will take place on
Tuesday, October 1st and Wednesday, October 2nd from 10 am to 3 pm at Rockwood Centennial
Public School. Students entering Grade 1 FI will not require previous French experience (in the
startup year only). The location of the proposed FI program in Rockwood will not be announced
until January 2014, at the conclusion of an upcoming boundary review. More questions? Come to
our French Immersion Parent Night at 7 pm on Thursday, September 26th in the gym at
Rockwood Centennial PS.
This early registration is important because it will confirm the viability of a French Immersion
program in Rockwood. By registering your child, you are signaling a commitment to participation
in the FI program. More information will be available next week at
www.ugdsb.on.ca/fi-rockwood.
Food Program
Everything you need to know about the food program is coming home today. Please complete the
steps and send back the required information by Monday, September 9th at
the very latest.
Battery Recycling at School
If you have small household batteries, including disposable batteries (ie. alkaline AA, AAA),
rechargeable batteries (ie. NiCd and NiMH AA, AAA), cell phone batteries, etc. please send
them to school with your child and he/she can place them in our battery recycling pail at the
main office.
Changes Over the Summer
Over the summer there have been a few changes to the school. You will notice that the
portable has been removed and the sod is scheduled to be replaced. The flag pole has been
replaced. In the boys washroom some new tiles have been laid down to improve what was there
originally. The playground structure that was surrounding the wiggle-pod area was provided for
and replaced by the Board of Education. We installed a new electric screen that makes it easily
accessible. Every classroom has had a new computer put in to replace an outdated one and we
are in the process of organizing one cart with 10 laptops and one cart with 30 Chromebooks
which will be used during classrooms studies. We had 2 electrical outlets
installed between the washrooms. We have a new water fountain which
fills water bottles as well which we anticipate will be very well used this
year. And finally, a new emergency defibrillator has arrived.
***Important Information to Complete and Return***
Many important forms are coming home today. Please complete and return these to the school
as soon as possible.

First School Council Meeting
The first school council meeting of the year will take place at 7 pm in the library on Tuesday,
September 10th. You will receive a school council nomination form. Please fill it out and return
it if you are interested in running for Chair, Treasurer, Secretary or Parent Rep.
Elections/Acclimation, budget development, EPSAC barbeque and fundraising ideas are a few of
the items to be covered. Please consider coming out to join us! Meetings take place the second
Tuesday of the month starting at 7 pm.
Electronic Newsletter
To help save the environment and reduce the use of ink, paper, toner, etc., paper copies will be
provided only to people who contact Ms. MacKenzie at the office and make arrangements. Thank
you for helping us help the environment! The newsletter can be viewed at
www.ugdsb.on.ca/eramosa and they are available on the first school day of the month.
Thank You to Mr. Baker
A special thank you to Mr. Baker, our custodian, and his caretaking staff for cleaning our school
over the summer. Mr. Baker and his team are proud of our school and it shows!
Agendas
Agendas are a valuable communication tool that promotes the habit of excellent
organization. Thank you to EPSAC for supporting this initiative.
Students with Life Threatening Allergies to Peanuts and Nuts - Anaphylaxis
We have students with life threatening allergic reactions to peanuts and other nuts. The
safety of all our students is very important to us. Please be aware that, due to legislation
requiring every school to reduce the risk of exposure of anaphylactic causative agents, we are
restricting the presence of nuts at Eramosa. Please DO NOT send nut products to
school for snack or lunch with your child; this includes imitation nut products.
Students with anaphylaxis may perish if they come into contact with foods
containing even small amounts of peanuts or nuts.
Family Handbook
The Family Handbook can be found on-line at the Eramosa School Website found at
www.ugdsb.on.ca/eramosa. Please take time to review this with your child.
Toonies for Terry
Please mark Thursday, Sept. 26th on your calendar as the date of our annual
Terry Fox Run. We will send home information soon about our plans for this
event.
Half Day PA Days
Please note that this year we have two half day Professional Activity Days on Friday,
October 25th and Friday, June 6th. This may be challenging for some parents, but it’s because
of the government’s Putting Students First Act (Bill 115) and our long standing contractual
agreement with our elementary teachers.
Students will attend school in the morning only on these two days. Busses will run taking
students home at dismissal time. For our school, this will be 11:40am, and students will eat
lunch at home.
We understand and apologize for the frustration this will create for many families who need to
arrange child care and juggle work schedules. Please read the full information about the two
half day PA Days on the Board’s website www.ugdsb.on.ca/calendars.
Class Organizations
Classroom organizations are tentative until our enrolment numbers are confirmed and the Board
staffing committee meets to review Ministry compliance. Necessary changes will be made in the
third week of school. Mrs. Plazek will contact parents of any students who will be moved.
Eramosa Staff and Phone Extensions for 2013 – 2014
For future reference, please refer to this list. To report a late arrival or student absence
we ask that you leave a message only at extension 100. This extension is monitored
regularly every day.

Open House
Our September Open House, Barbeque and Book Fair will be held on Thursday, September 19th
from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm.
Our evening schedule is:
5:30 - 7:00 Book Fair
5:30 - 6:30 Barbeque
6:00 - 7:00 Classrooms open
More information about the EPSAC BBQ will be sent home in the coming weeks.
Because of time constraints and lack of privacy on Open House Night, this is not an appropriate
time for individual parent-teacher conferences or progress reports. If you would like more
specific information about your child’s progress, please feel free to make an appointment with
his/her teacher on a different day, when your questions can be properly addressed.
School Bus Information
Our school bus routes will be driven by First Student (Route 200) and Denny’s (Routes 371, 372,
373, 374 and 375). We are pleased to welcome our bus drivers Jody, Darlene, Randy, Paul,
James and Rhonda. Some of our drivers have long-standing connections to Eramosa PS and we
appreciate the care that they take to get our children safely to and from school every day. A
group of students in grades 5 and 6 have been trained in simple First Aid and emergency
procedures and serve as Bus Patrols. Their job is to support children in bus lines and on the
bus, and to work with the driver to maintain order on the bus.
Kindergarten children will be assigned Bus Buddies who will assist our
youngest children with bus routines.
Please review the expectations of the bus drivers in the Family Handbook
with your child. A safe and happy bus ride is good for everyone.
School Visitors
We love to have company! Parents and volunteers are often at Eramosa for a variety of reasons.
When you come into the building, please follow these procedures:
1.
2.
3.
Go into the office to report to Ms. MacKenzie. Please wait until you are received.
Sign our Guest book.
Pick up a visitor button to wear while you are with us.
Lifetouch Photographers
Individual and class photographs will be taken by Lifetouch on Monday, October
28th and on Tuesday, October 29th for our Kindergarten B class and anyone who
was absent. More information will follow with details about how to purchase.
Safe Arrival and Departure
If you drive your child(ren) to school in the morning, please drop them off at the front walk,
ask them to put their backpacks in their designated class line and join their friends on the
playground. Students are not to walk on the black top unescorted in the morning or afternoon
for safety purposes. Entry into the school prior to the bell is permitted only under special
circumstances and with permission from the classroom teacher. Children who arrive late need
to report to the main office to pick up a late slip before going to their classroom. Parents may
accompany children to the front foyer, and children will walk from there to their classrooms on
their own or with a staff member.
If you pick up your child during the day or after school, please sign them out on the appropriate
bus clip board in Ms. MacKenzie’s office. We will ask you to wait in the front foyer, where
your child will meet you. Please do not go to the hallway, classroom or playground to pick
up your child. If someone other than the parent or guardian is picking up your child, please
send a note or call the school to let us know. Thank you for understanding that these
procedures are in place for the safety of all of our children.
Recess
Recess time is designed for students to take a break from their studies
and to enjoy some outdoor active play. This is an opportunity for them to
learn and practise social skills of taking turns, playing fairly and including
others. Students are welcome to bring skipping ropes and balls from home.
Please label all equipment with your child’s name. Access to the creative
play structures will be dependent on weather conditions. For safety
reasons please note that children will not be allowed on this equipment if
they are wearing flip flops. Older students are not to pick up younger
students on the playground, or inside the hallways.
Medication at School
All student prescription medication must be stored and administered from the office. It is
important for the safety of the child taking the medicine and the other students in the school.
In order to give any medication, we must have the appropriate form completed and signed by a
parent or guardian. As well, the container must have the pharmaceutical sticker on it
indicating the name of the child and directions for administering the medication. This is
designed to ensure that mistakes are not made. Please call the school when you require these
forms.
Children requiring medication such as EPI-PENS for life-threatening medical conditions are
required to carry these medications with them at all times. We suggest a fanny pack.
Additional EPI-PENS may be kept in the school office.
If your child has a life threatening medical condition, please call the school for more
information and to set up a “Life Threatening Management & Prevention Plan. ”
Student Accident Insurance
Parents or guardians are responsible for expenses related to student injuries on school
premises during school activities. Accidents can and do happen and the costs involved might not
be fully covered by Provincial Health Care or employer group insurance plans.
The Upper Grand District School Board is empowered under the Education Act to offer
Accident and Life Insurance for students.
Information will be sent home in September with respect to Student Accident Insurance
offered by the Reliable Life Insurance Company. You should receive the Director's letter, an
Acknowledgment to be signed by parents (and returned to school) and a Student Accident
Insurance application form (to be mailed directly to Reliable Life). Reliable Life Insurance
Company offers a variety of options, including family rates and multi-year plans, at affordable
prices. The cost must be paid by parents or guardian.
Subscription is directly through Reliable Life by mail or on line. Questions should be directed
to Reliable Life at 1-800-463-5437 or www.insuremykids.com
For today's active children, especially those who participate in field trips, co-curricular and
other school activities outside the school day, Student Accident Insurance is valuable. You can
find additional information on the Board’s website at www.ugdsb.on.ca.
Dress for the Weather
September weather can be unpredictable. We plan to go outside for every
recess break, unless there is heavy rain or the threat of severe storm.
Children should have a sweater or light jacket in their backpacks to wear
outside if necessary.
All children need to have two sets of footwear, one for indoor use and the
other for outdoor. The best choice is running shoes, which can double as
gym shoes, for both indoor and outdoor use. For safety reasons, flip flops
are not suitable for school.
Head Lice
This is a good time to check your child(ren) carefully for head lice. Many children are in close
contact with each other over the summer and as a result these pests spread easily. If you do
find head lice on your child they must be treated and all nits/eggs removed before the child
returns to school. We need volunteers to periodically check children here at school. These
checks are done during class time and volunteers are discreet in reporting their findings to the
office. If you not wish to have your child participate in routine checks for head lice, please
send a note to the school. If you are interested in offering your assistance we would greatly
appreciate your help.
Bicycles
Students in grades 5 and 6 may ride their bicycles, weather permitting, if they have written
parental permission. One note is sufficient for the season. Students need to wear a helmet,
walk their bicycles on school property, lock it on the bicycle rack and follow
safety and traffic rules when riding to and from school. They need to inform
the office when they ride their bike home before they leave. For the safety of
all, permission may be temporarily withdrawn from individual students if these
rules are not followed.
Parent Involvement at School
There is a great deal of information and research out there that talks about Parent
Involvement in Schools. There are Parent Involvement Committees, Parent Advocacy Groups,
Parents for Education and Parent Councils. There is also the 24 hour a day, 7 days a week,
parent responsibilities of work, home and outside activities that require our attention. In
today’s world, parents are pressed for time.
So what do you say when you get that request from us, your child’s school, to volunteer? How
can you fit it all in this school year? How do you stay involved in your child’s education, manage
all of your other responsibilities and carve out even a minute for yourself?
The good news is that the research about Parent Involvement has shifted. While we used to
talk about parents being in the schools (which we’d still love to see happen), it now talks about
ways that we can work together to support your child’s well being and learning. John Hattie
(2009) suggests that you can best support your children’s learning by talking with them. When
you do this, he suggests that children will be more successful at school. As the start of the
2013-2014 school year begins, make it a daily habit to talk with your children about their day at
school. Other than the traditional, “what did you do at school today”, try these questions to get
more than the typical “nothing” response.
What helped you learn today?
What was hard for you today?
What are you going to try to do differently tomorrow?
What questions did you ask today?
What questions could you have asked?
What are you interested in learning more about?
As your children’s teachers, educational assistants, principals, vice principals, office and
custodial staff we value and want your support. Support however comes in many shapes and
sizes. Being involved includes more than attending Open House, Parent-Teacher interviews and
meetings, reading the school and classroom newsletters and volunteering. Being involved means
being a partner in your children’s education. It means talking and working with your children’s
teacher to ensure your children are coming to school each and every day this school year ready
to learn. Support means being a listener, asking questions, mentoring, being a coach, talking
about school and being a co-learner. (Building Parent Engagement 2011)
Parent involvement means holding high aspirations and expectations for
our children. (Hung & Ho, 2005) Expect the best from your children, hold
the bar high and this school year when you ask, “What did you do at
school today?” don’t accept “nothing” as a response. There’s a lot going on
in school and as partners in your children’s education, we want you to
know about our day at school!
Portable Technology – Eramosa P.S.
2013-2014
The use of portable technology is a very real part of our everyday lives, however it is important to
ensure that it is used to enrich the learning environment for everyone. There are a number of
existing and emerging technologies (ICT Information and Communication technology) including
interactive Whiteboards, storage devices, personal digital entertainment devices (PDEs), MP3
players, personal digital assistants (PDAs), mobile phones, laptops, desktops, tablet PCs, gaming
devices, assistive and adaptive technologies, digital cameras, scanners, smart cards and a range of
content delivery methods.
The Acceptable Use of Digital Technology (Policy 318) states, "It is the Policy of the
Upper Grand District School Board to provide safe and secure digital technology for
educational and Board business applications. The primary purpose is to support the
educational learning experiences of students through research and communication
opportunities, and to enhance the business operating efficiencies for administrative
purposes. This service is a privilege, not an assumed right. All users must take
responsibility for their own actions."
The Home Use of Assistive Technology Protocol is applicable for those students to
whom this applies.
Cell phones may not be used by students at Eramosa PS to call or text anyone unless
supervised at the office for emergency purposes. Students may not videotape or
photograph other students unless there is an educational objective that has been
specified by a teacher. To respect freedom of information, video and photo images
taken at school functions are not to be posted in public domains by anyone without
prior permission.
The Principal has the authority to determine the specific rules for the use of technology in
the school and are subject to change. The Principal delegates authority to the specific
classroom teacher to use technology in their classroom to improve classroom instruction.
Not all teachers will use/permit the same degree of use of portable technology in their
classroom. Teachers will clearly outline when and if portable technology is permitted for
use in their classroom. These expectations will be clearly communicated to the students
by the teacher (supply teacher) on a teacher by teacher basis. This policy will be reviewed
with all students.
Examples of this might include:
- using calculator function on an electronic item
- using an electronic item to research a topic using an internet search engine
- permitting a student to listen to his/her MP3 player when his/her work is finished
If a teacher decides that a student is misusing his/her technology (using it inappropriately, defying
the teacher's decision for example) in the classroom he/she will follow the progressive consequence
steps listed below:
1st offence - electronic item is taken to the office for the day and sent home at the end of the day
with the student; parent notified of inappropriate use by the teacher Date:
---nd
2 offence - electronic item taken to the office by the teacher, the parents are phoned by the
teacher and a parent will be required to pick up the item from the office (incident
recorded by the teacher and the office). Date:---3rd offence- electronic item is confiscated by the teacher and taken to the office- the
student's privilege to bring the specific item to school is revoked- a letter will
document that this is the third incident. The parent will be asked to pick up the item.
At this point the teaching environment, the student's learning (and/or the rights of
others) is being compromised. Date: ----The use of digital or photographic imagery equipment, including, but not limited to, cell phones,
PDAs and cameras is expressly forbidden in all school washrooms and change rooms. Failure to
observe this directive will result in the immediate confiscation of equipment and could lead to
prosecution by the authorities. At all times, personal technology equipment remains the
responsibility of the individuals. At no time will the Upper Grand District School Board be
responsible for or accountable for its loss, theft, inappropriate use, or any damage that may occur
while on school property. The decision to send this equipment rests solely with the parent/
guardian.
Digital Respect is at the root of expectations regarding the appropriate use of technological tools.
Digital Respect is making a conscious choice to respect others when using any digital devices and
services. This includes everything from email to online social sites and mobile phones. Digital
Respect is using technology respectfully- that is- not for the purpose of harming others. Digital
Respect is often just "good manners".
There remains little doubt about the power these new tools have to diminish personal
communication roadblocks; now there is never a reason not to be "available". However just like
email, there are a number of social concerns that accompany any electronic communications tools.
Our expectation is that all staff, students, parents and guests of the UGDSB will comply with
all Board and School guidelines on practicing Digital Respect. What does Digital Respect look like?
For example:
- parents and staff will turn off their cell phones when they are in an interview/meeting.
- parents will call the front desk to inform the staff responsible for attendance about an
unscheduled appointment.
- no taking/posting of any photos on a social network site without the express permission of the
person(s) involved.
This policy will remain in effect until further notice.
Please see the Acceptable Use of Digital Technology Policy #318 (and Handbook) and the Web
Publishing Policy #312 available on the Upper Grand District School Board Website for more
detailed information.

Celebrate International Walk to School Day
I WALK Day is Wednesday, October 9, 2013
Did you know that most children can walk 1 kilometer in only 11 minutes! There are many
good reasons to walk or bike to school. Its good exercise, improves concentration, builds
neighbourhood awareness, protects the environment, and promotes independence.
Being outdoors and walking with family and friends is fun.
