Fine Arts Courses Continued AMU 10N - Grade 9 Instrumental Music for the Beginner This instrumental course is designed with the beginner in mind. It introduces the student to the basics of performance either on a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument. Students who have played or are currently studying piano, violin or guitar and desire to learn a wind instrument are encouraged to take this course. OR AMU 10 - Grade 9 Instrumental Music for the Experienced This course is designed for the experienced student who plays on a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument. Students will further develop their skills and understanding through a variety of activities related to performance, theory, and music appreciation. AVI 10 - Grade 9 Art This course provides students with the opportunity to try a wide variety of art materials and techniques in order to deepen their understanding of the elements and principles of design. Projects include different styles of drawing, painting and sculpture. Students will also learn how to develop their own creative ideas. This course is a good foundation for future study in Visual Arts. AMG 20 - Intro. to Guitar and Contemporary Music This course emphasizes performance of music at a beginner’s level striking a balance between challenge and skill using standard notation, tablature (Tab) and chord charts. Students will also be required to develop an understanding of the language of music, including the element, terminology and history. This course is open to students with little or no previous guitar experience. Each student is assigned their own guitar for the semester but may choose to use their personal acoustic guitar. AMU 20 - Grade 10 Instrumental Music This instrumental music course builds upon the skills which students may have acquired in AMU 10 or through some previous form of instrumental instruction. Students will be engaged in activities related to performance on a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument. They will also participate in activities which will encourage their creative abilities. Participation in the extra-curricular band is recommended. AVI 20N - Grade 10 Art for Beginners Students create a series of artworks that reinforce an understanding of the elements and principles of art. Students will have the opportunity to create paintings, sculptures and drawings and will also learn to develop their sense of creativity. This course is geared for students who would like to learn about Art but have not taken AVI 10. This course provides a good foundation for future study in Visual Arts. AVI 20 - Grade 10 Experienced Art This course if for students who have completed AVI 10 and would like to further develop their skills in Art. Assignments in this course are about discovery and experimentation; students will create drawings, illustrations, paintings, sculptures, stop-motion animation, sculptures and masks. AMG 30 - Guitar This course develops students’ knowledge and skills through performance and their own compositions. Students will perform works in the contemporary popular styles (rock, country etc.) Students will plan, market, and produce a year-end concert (and/or recording) independently and in groups. They will also evaluate the results. Groups can expect to experiment with musical enhancements. AMG20 is recommended. AMU 3M - Grade 11 Instrumental Music This course is designed to further develop performance skills with a focus on the creative process. Students will learn to understand music’s role in society and its impact on communities. Opportunities will ge given to develop lifelong skills through their involvement in class. Participation in the extracurricular band program is strongly recommended. Prerequisite: AMU10 or AMU 20. AVI 3M - Grade 11 Art This course explores different styles of art, and expects students to begin developing a deeper understanding of various media, techniques and creative decisionmaking. Areas of study may include painting, drawing, printmaking, street art, abstraction, graffiti, printmaking and modern art history. There is a $10.00 course material fee . PREREQUISITE: AVI 10, AVI 20N, OR AVI 20 AMG 4M - Instrumental Music Guitar This course emphasizes the appreciation, analysis and performance of music from genres of the 20th and 21st centuries including rock, pop, jazz, blues, country and R&B. Students will learn accompaniment instruments (bass guitar and percussion) to develop the ability to play in a band. Students will complete projects, including composing, and arranging their own songs as well as develop their ability for improvisation of the guitar. PREREQUISITE: AMG3O AMU 4M -Grade 12 Instrumental Music Woodwind, brass, percussion In this course, there will be a focus on the development of creativity in performance as well as music’s impact on their lives, various communities and cultures. Also, activities presented in this course will further encourage lifelong skills and future participation in the arts. Being involved in the extracurricular band program is strong recommended. PREREQUISITE: AMU 3M AVI 4M - Grade 12 Art This course allows students to deepen their personal understanding of Art and the creative process through open ended projects based on their experience and creative ideas. Units of study may include personal expression, metaphor and abstraction, independent thematic work and modern/post modern art history. Students will showcase their artworks in exhibits, critiques and presentation. PREREQUISITE: AVI 3M
