April 2014
Principal’s Message:
Glenbrook Official Opening:
The seventh annual World Autism
Awareness Day is on Wednesday,
April 2nd, 2014. In order to raise
awareness for autism, we are asking
that the students at Glenbrook wear
blue on April 2nd. The residents of
Shelburne will notice that the Town
Hall in Shelburne will be “lit up blue”
on this day as well.
We are pleased to announce that Glenbrook Elementary School
will hold its “Official Opening” on Thursday, May 1st, at 7:00 p.m.
We expect that a number of dignitaries will attend this event and
look forward to having Upper Grand District School Board Officials join us for this memorable occasion. Mrs. Jotham and Mrs. Horsley are
in the process of directing a school choir that will perform at this celebration.
Ms. Londos has prepared a slide show highlighting the school and many of
the events that have been held at Glenbrook this year.
We thank Michelle Dodds, a parent at
Glenbrook, for spearheading this initiative here in town. Michelle is the
director of a newly formed Autism
Support Group in Shelburne called
S.P.O.T.S. (Shelburne Parents On
The Spectrum). Please join the staff
and students of the Upper Grand District School Board in our efforts to
inspire compassion, empowerment,
and hope, by wearing blue on
Wednesday, April 2nd.
Thanks for supporting this cause!
School Council Meeting:
The next Glenbrook
School Council meeting
will be held on Thursday, April 3rd, 2014, at
6:15 p.m. in the
school’s staff room.
We encourage all parents of students
at Glenbrook to attend this meeting.
We invite you to come to hear about
all of the wonderful things that are
happening at Glenbrook Elementary
School. We look forward to seeing
you at this meeting. New members
are always welcome.
School Council Purchases Five More Computers:
The computer lab at Glenbrook now has 30 laptop computers thanks to the fundraising efforts of the Glenbrook
School Council. Monies raised through the Dance-a-thon
held in February enabled the School Council to purchase an
additional five computers. This means that every student
from every class will be able to have individual access to a computer when
visiting the lab in the school library. This is a huge accomplishment for our
school and a significant advantage for the students at Glenbrook. We thank
our School Council for their hard work and dedication in raising these funds
for this purpose. Our students are fortunate to have access to this technol-
Special Education I.E.P. Survey:
Does your child have an IEP? If so the Special Education Department would
like your feedback about special education supports and services. A survey
for parents will be posted on the Upper Grand District School Board website
from April 14- April 30th. This survey is for parents who have children within
the Upper Grand District School Board with Individual Education Plans
(IEPs). The information from the survey will be used to help in the planning
of special education supports and services. Responses will be kept confidential and used in summary reports. We appreciated your willingness to provide
assistance with this survey.
Staffing Change At Glenbrook:
On April 11th, Ms. Voigt will complete her long term occasional position at
Glenbrook. I would like to thank Ms. Voigt for all that she has done for the students in our grade 2 classroom. We have appreciated her hard work and
dedication in teaching these students and want her to know that she will be
missed.
On Monday, April 14th, 2014, Mrs. Whitford will take over the teaching duties
in our grade 2 classroom. Mrs. Whitford has been on maternity leave. We are
pleased to have Mrs. Whitford joining our staff.
Friday, April 18th & Monday April 21st, 2014 —No School
Glenbrook Basketball Teams :
The boys’ and girls’ basket ball teams are in the process
of preparing for a series of pre-tournament basketball
games. Practices are being held during Nutrition breaks
and after school hours. We wish our students well as they
participate in these games. We extend a special thank
you to Mr. Schooley for coaching the boys’ team and to
Mrs. Gammage for coaching the girl’s team. Our students
are very excited about being able to compete this season
and are working hard to represent Glenbrook to the best
of their abilities.
The Great Big Crunch:
Students at Glenbrook participated in the Great Big Crunch on Thursday,
March 6th. Every student at our school ate an apple or some apple slices to
celebrate healthy snacking and locally grown fruit. The apples were purchased from Albion Orchards.
Glenbrook was one of hundreds of elementary schools to participate in this
event. We hope to make this an annual activity at the school. We thank Mrs.
Bernard-McCabe for organizing this event for our students!
Traffic In Our Front Parking Lot:
We ask that parents NOT stop/park their vehicles along
the sidewalk located in front of the front doors of the
school. This is a bus loading / unloading area at our
school. This represents a significant safety issue for the
students who travel to and from Glenbrook on this bus.
Students who are being “dropped off” by parents should
be dropped off on the sidewalk located between the Recreation Complex and
the school (on the west side of the school). This will significantly reduce the
traffic congestion in the front parking lot. We appreciate your cooperation.
Dogs at School:
We remind parents
and community members to clean up after
your dog if you
choose to exercise
your dog on school
property after school
hours.
Students should not have to be concerned with dog feces on school
property. We appreciate your cooperation.
Dufferin Youth Festival
of the Arts (D.Y.F.A.):
Students from Glenbrook
Elementary School will
be participating in the
Dufferin Youth Festival
of the Arts being held
from Monday, May 5th
until Thursday, May 8th. The Festival
is being held at the Compass Community Church located on the corner
of Highway #10 and Hockley Valley
Road.
Our school choir will sing and student
artwork will be on display. We thank
Mrs. Jotham and Ms. Nienhuis for the
work put forward to enable our students to be a part of this “arts celebration.”
A Message From Mrs. Stewart in The School Library:
April is a busy time in the library. Students in grades K—3 will be voting for their favourite Blue Spruce book,
celebrating all 10 books, and finding out which book was voted the favourite in Ontario. Grade 3—8 students involved in the Silver Birch or Red Maple programs will also be voting and celebrating the results and
their success in the program.

E.Q.A.O. Primary and Junior Provincial Assessment of Reading, Writing and Math:
The students at Glenbrook Elementary School have been preparing for the Education Quality and Accountability Office’s
(E.Q.A.O.) Provincial Assessment of Reading Writing and Mathematics throughout the school year.
During the months of May and June, students in Grades 3 and Grade 6 will take part in the Education Quality and Accountability Office’s (E.Q.A.O.) Provincial Assessment of Reading, Writing and Mathematics. This assessment has been
scheduled to take place between May 26th and June 6th, 2014. During the month of April we will be providing further
information about this assessment to parents of the Grade 3 and 6 students who complete this assessment.
Students will engage in a 1 hour assessment or two 1 hour assessments each day for a four day period. The assessment is designed to be completed within 6 hours. The Grade 3 students will complete the assessment from May 26th to
May 29th. The Grade 6 students will complete the assessment on May 29th, May 30th, June 2nd and June 3rd. All assessment materials must be returned to E.Q.A.O. on June 6th, 2014.
We ask that the parents of our Grade 3 & 6 students make every attempt to have their child(ren) at
school on time for each of the assessment days in order to ensure that your child has the opportunity
to complete the assessment. Results of this assessment will be returned to the school in the fall of
2014.
