Artist breaks mold
through work
Inspired by her mother, senior Eva
Johnson molded a piece intended to
capture a humorous personality. “It’s part of
a larger piece entitled ‘The Johnson Family
Portrait,’”Johnson said. “It’s not deeply
symbolic or anything.” In honor of Dia de los
Muertos, sophomore Chanel Bailer paints one
of the traditional masks. “We started the masks
with a ball of newspaper,” Bailer said. “Tinfoil
was added to the outside of the mask to
harden it into the shape we want. I then had to
glue more strips of newspaper on the mask to
have a surface to paint on. That was my favorite
part because mine had intricate details.”

Art and crime aren’t typically associated, but
junior Katherine Pierce isn’t new to breaking
barriers. Her latest portrait combines a comic style
with mature themes to explore the lens of crime.
“I’ve always been drawing a lot, but started
seriously working on improving my technique in
sixth grade,” Pierce said. ‘I just started focusing
on the subject I like to draw the most, people. My
favorite piece right now is of a woman holding a
gun. I really like her expression and how it turned
out overall to convey my concentration theme of
crime.”
Though using several different mediums over the
years, Pierce has discovered a preference.
“My favorite medium is a cross between pen and
graphite,” Pierce said. “Pen is really fun for more
graphic comic style drawing, but graphite is really
good for getting more realistic pieces.”
Along with selling some of her art, Pierce also has
had her work on display off-campus. Despite her
young age and novelty to the field, as a freshman,
Pierce was one of 100 high school students in
Florida to have one of her pieces accepted and
featured in the Salvador Dali museum in St.
Petersberg.
“It takes a lot of work to develop talent,” Pierce
said. “When I was starting out with deformed stick
figures I got discouraged a lot and thought that
I just couldn’t draw, but it took a ton of practice.
I learned not to give up right away because art is
about dedication and practice rather than natural
talent. Realistic portraits aren’t drawn overnight.”
Pierce’s love for art goes deeper than just being a
class in her school schedule.
“Art has had a big influence on my life,” Pierce
said. “I’m always drawing in my spare time or
doodling in class, and I’ve tried to do as many
shows and competitions as I can.”

PIECE BY PIECE
To create a piece about numbers, junior Liliana LeBeau uses water
colors and water colored pencils. “I wanted to be different so I made
mine abstract,” LeBeau said. Being inspired by the beauty of
nature, junior Mohammed Ahmed designed a flower in Photoshop.
For his graphic design portfolio, senior Joseph Crown completed
an abstract portrait. ”It was an exploration of myself,” Crown said.
“It’s a self portrait, but I don’t like to do faces, so it isn’t really me.”

Employing the medium of pen,
Pierce works on an assignment during
her Advanced Placement Drawing and
Painting class. “High Tops” done in
graphite, was modeled simply after
a pair of shoes Pierce likes to wear.
“Half Portrait” done in graphite,
originally started as a doodle. “I just
sketched her raising an eyebrow, but
decided to finish it as a full portrait,”
Pierce said. “Bell Pepper Close-up”
done in colored pencil, was a result
of Pierce’s ambition to draw a still life
during this past summer. “I looked
through my house and just grabbed
something I thought would be fun
to do,” Pierce said. “It’s not all that
deep.”

Sophomore Kayelee Embry focuses on drawing while changing the scenery
by going outdoors. “I love going to Disney,” Embry said. “So, I chose to draw
my Mickey hat.” To create “Un Etude Dolce,” junior Melissa Huberman
used a unique combination of mediums. Sketching in her Drawing and
Painting 1 class, sophomore Jaida Condo draws a still life. “I chose to draw
this because I find flowers one of the prettiest things in nature,” Condo said. “I
love art because it’s a way for me to try to recreate the beauty of the world.”
