College of Liberal and Applied Arts Chair Council Minutes April 4, 2011 The meeting began at 2:30pm in room 273D of the Ferguson Building. The people in attendance included the following: Dr. Rick Abel (Government) Dr. Ron Anderson (Psychology) Dr. Freddie Avant (Social Work) Dr. John Dahmus (College Council) Dr. Troy Davis (History) Dr. John Hendricks (Communication) Dr. Brian Murphy (Dean) Dr. Jeana Paul-Urena (Modern Languages) LTC Todd Reichert (Military Science) Dr. Mark Sanders (English) Dr. Jerry Williams (Sociology) Dean Murphy distributed the College Council’s proposed revision to the strategic directions document. Two grammatical amendments were approved. It was agreed that a committee would be formed in Fall Semester to devise an implementation plan. Dean Murphy circulated the proposed format for the College’s first Honors Banquet. The chairs approved the proposal after substituting a buffet dinner in place of a plated dinner. By April 11, chairs will forward to the Dean’s Office the names of award recipients along with a description of each award. Departments will begin the process of notifying students of the event. The College will pay the dinner costs of the award recipients. Departments will collect the monies from faculty and guests. Students receiving honor society awards will be recognized at the banquet (by standing) and the department will cover their meals. By April 25, departments will inform Ms. Dixie Groll about the number attending and forward the monies. Departments will also supply the following information on each recipient: hometown and future plans. The banquet is scheduled for May 3 at 5:00 in the Twilight Ballroom. Dean Murphy informed the chairs that summer orientation sessions would be reduced from six to five events for the upcoming summer. Dean Murphy inquired if the chairs understood how they were to address the research/community service assessment report. The chairs expressed need for greater clarification and Dean Murphy promised a follow up session to “get everyone on the same page.” Dr. John Dahmus presented the College Council’s revision to the proposed internship policy for the College. The chairs requested a few minor changes that will be considered by the College Council at its n ext meeting. Dr. Dahmus next reviewed the Council’s proposal to amend the writing enhanced policy. After discussion, the chairs proposed that the current uniform policy on the topic should be eliminated and replaced by departmental policies that more appropriately addressed disciplinary needs. The goal is to have departmental policies developed by September 30, 2011, subject to dean’s approval. The meeting adjourned at 4:05 pm.
