Dean Brian Murphy introduced Dr. Bob Szafran to provide an update on the new core curriculum. Dr. Szafran reported that the committee continues to review course proposals for inclusion in the new core curriculum and will begin to meet more frequently to conclude its work in a timely fashion. Dean Murphy inquired if any feedback existed on the preliminary draft of unit goals for the departments. Several modifications were proposed and the draft will be considered at the next meeting for final approval. Dean Murphy announced that a major thrust for next academic year would be the development of dual degrees, most likely at the master’s level, with institutions overseas. He asked chairs to contemplate possible degree opportunities for discussion at the next meeting.

Associate Dean Marc Guidry informed the chairs of a pilot program to be launched during the upcoming summer session.

Entitled PLAN, it would provide a study skills alternative for suspension students. Dr. Guidry next provided an update on the

Research Apprenticeship Program (RAP). He reviewed a couple of modifications to the program and received approval from the chairs to implement them.

Drs. Jeana Paul-Urena and John Hendricks solicited input on how to conduct the College’s Freshman Convocation. It was agreed that the college event, scheduled for September 5, should be scaled down and much of the focus should be transferred to departments to arrange separate events at a later date. The venue would be switched from the Grand Ballroom to the movie theater.

Dean Murphy circulated a revised agenda for the Honors Banquet, reviewed it with the chairs, and established deadlines for the receipt of information from departments. Dean Murphy discussed how the College would collaborate more closely with the Development Office. In order to enhance fundraising, departments were requested to submit a list of their top two funding priorities by week’s end.

Dean Murphy announced some institutional policy changes and the meeting adjourned at 4:20 pm. http://laa.sfasu.edu/
