Full Facility Surge Protection – Point of Use Applications
Application Guide
Dangerous power disturbances can exist anywhere in a facility. In fact, a large portion of transients are generated by
equipment from within a facility. Installing surge protection at the electrical service entrance and distribution panels
are prudent choices and highly recommended by Emerson Network Power, however, in most cases these choices
don’t go far enough in securing overall power quality protection for individual pieces of equipment operating within a
building. In order to be fully protected, we strongly recommend surge protection be installed at specific sensitive
loads and in areas exposed to external transients.
AC Power – Point of Use
A low exposure environment can include both business and residential office settings, anywhere
where computers, faxes, TVs, satellite dishes, etc are plugged into an AC outlet and susceptible to
power quality issues such as extreme power surges from a lightning strike.
The PSS PRF1080 professional series provides protection for eight standard receptacles, with the
PSS NET1080T Network Series providing protection for eight standard receptacles along with
phone line protection. The angled plug allows connection of the surge protector without covering
the other wall outlet.
PSS Series
The Islatrol™ SP-6TVN provides protection for six standard receptacles accommodating tight
spaces due to rotating, repositionable outlets and small, flexible design. It has an operational
status indicator light, which alerts for improper wiring/grounding, along with cables for telephone,
video, and data line protection.

Rackmount Protection
Rack mounted surge suppressors offer a high-density method of terminating multiple inputs and outputs of sensitive
electronics in equipment rooms. This reduces cost, space and time involved with the installation. In addition, rack
mounting also provides a convenient single-point ground.
The Islatrol™ RM-120-10RM rackmount surge protector provides 10
protected receptacles on the back and two protected convenience
receptacles on the front of the unit. The devices supply 40 kA of surge
protection and up to 60 dB of high-frequency noise filtering. The frontmounted digital meter monitors the voltage, current and power of the
protected equipment.

Rackmount Protection
The Edco™ RM-CX06-16R 16-channel rack mount coax protector
implements three-stage hybrid technology. It addresses overvoltage
transients with a primary Gas Discharge Tube (GDT), and secondary Silicon
Avalanche Diode (SAD) components. Sneak and fault currents are mitigated
with solid-state resettable fuses— PTCs. Designed in accordance with NFPA
780 requirements, with up to 20kA of surge current capability.
The Edco™ RM-CAT6-POE Series is a multi-channel high-speed data line
protector that utilizes a three-stage hybrid design technology. This unit
addresses high-energy voltage transients that can damage expensive
computer equipment. Ideal for network switches and hubs, the Edco RMCAT6-POE Series is easily mounted in close proximity to the protected
equipment.

Parking Lot / Street Lighting Protection
Parking lot lighting, because of their high exposure to weather conditions, should have
protection installed. The Edco™ SHAS Series easily installs directly inside a light pole, it’s
manufactured in a weather-tight enclosure and provides line and neutral to ground
protection.

IEEE Standard
IEEE Standard 1100 Section 8.6.4 “… it is recommended that additional surge protective
devices of listed Category “B” or Category “A,” as specified in IEEE Std C62.41-1991, be
applied to downstream electrical switchboards and panelboards, and panelboards on
the secondary side of separately derived systems if they support communications, ITE,
signaling, television, or other form of electronic load equipment.”
