Protocols: Special Education and Information Technology Superintendent of Program/Superintendent Responsible for IT Jan 2008 Apr 2014 2018-19 School Year General This protocol will apply when a student requests to use technology outside of the school to meet program outcomes. In some cases, the technology may be requested on behalf of the student by the parent, guardian, teacher or Principal. The borrowing of Board-owned technology will follow the method currently established at the school site, under the direction of the Principal. This technology may involve Special Equipment Amount (SEA) technology and other Board-owned technology approved for home use. 2. Definitions Special Equipment Amount Special Equipment Amount (SEA) provides funding to school boards to assist with the costs of equipment essential to support students with special education needs where the need for specific equipment is recommended by a qualified professional. This equipment is to provide students with accommodations that are directly required and essential to access the Ontario curriculum and/or a board-determined alternative program and/or course and/or to attend school. 3. Principles 3.1 The Upper Grand District School Board supports the effective and appropriate use of technology for all students. 3.2 Technology is a tool for students to communicate, access the curriculum and demonstrate their understanding. 3.3 The Board works to provide a variety of solutions to support student learning recognizing the increasing importance of technology in the lives of our students. Rationale 4.1 This protocol is intended to promote equity of access to students who require technology outside of the school building in order to meet program outcomes. 4.2 Providing opportunities for students to use designated computers outside of the regular school day will benefit students with limited access to technology. 4.3 This protocol addresses issues related to: technical support, equipment damage and loss, and the management of Board-owned equipment outside of the school building. 4.4 This protocol reflects Policy 318, The Acceptable Use of Digital Technology that protects the safety and positive learning environment of students using Board-owned technology. Scope 5.1 Essential Technology For some students the use of technology is essential in order to communicate, to access the curriculum and to demonstrate understanding. The need for technology is recorded in students’ individual education plans (IEPs). 5.2 Care and Safety of Technology In order to protect and maintain working conditions of equipment, guidelines will be followed for transporting equipment off school property (See: Appendix A – Student Responsibilities). 5.3 Technical Support Technical standards will be provided and regularly updated in order to protect and manage the software and working system of the equipment. 5.4 Accessing Technology for Home Use To ensure that the Board-purchased equipment is used appropriately, the existing Acceptable Use of Digital Technology will apply at all times and locations (Policy #318).
