TheIndustrialEngineeringMinorisatransdisciplinarycollaborationbetweentheCollegeofEngineering
[COEN]andtheCollegeofBusiness’sSupplyChainManagementgroup[COBESCM]designedto(i)provide
trainingforengineeringandconstructionmanagementstudentsonthedesign,optimization,and
managementofcomplexmanufacturing,service,andsupplychainsystems,(ii)prepareengineeringstudents
withthetoolsneededtoapplyengineeringconceptstoissuesfacedbyproduction,service,andsupplychain
organizations,(iii)developtheanalyticalandmanagerialskillsnecessaryforsuccessfulcareersinindustry.

“IndustrialEngineeringgivespractitionerstheopportunitytoworkinavarietyofbusinesses.Many
practitionerssaythatanIndustrialEngineeringeducationoffersthebestofbothworlds:aneducationin
bothengineeringandbusiness.IndustrialEngineers[IE’s]aretheonlyengineeringprofessionalstrained
specificallytobeproductivityandqualityimprovementspecialists.
ThemostdistinctiveaspectofIndustrialEngineeringistheflexibilityitoffers.Whetherit’sshorteninga
rollercoasterline,streamlininganoperatingroom,distributingproductsworldwide,ormanufacturing
superiorautomobiles,thesechallengessharethecommongoalofsavingcompaniesmoneyandincreasing
efficiencies.ManypeoplearemisledbythetermIndustrialEngineer.It’snotjustaboutmanufacturing.Italso
encompassesserviceindustries,withmanyIEsemployedinentertainmentindustries,shippingandlogistics
businesses,andhealthcareorganizations.IE’sfigureouthowtodothingsbetter.Theyengineerprocessesand
systemsthatimprovequalityandproductivity.Theyworktoeliminatewasteoftime,money,materials,
energyandothercommodities.ThisiswhymanyIE’sendupbeingpromotedintomanagementpositions.”

Approximately220,000IE’swereemployedacrosstheUnitedStatesin2012inpositionswithavarietyof
titlesincluding“QualityEngineer”,“ProcessImprovementEngineer”,“ManufacturingEngineering”,“Project
Manager”,“IndustrialEngineer”,“SafetyEngineer”,“QualityAssuranceEngineer”and“ProductionEngineer”.
Itisestimatedthat10,000newIndustrialEngineeringjobswillbecreatedby2022.In2012,thenational
medianannualsalaryforanIEwas$78,860;themeanannualwageforIE’sinIdahowas$84,930.
