FSPA DISTRICT 7 PRE­SUBMITTED CONTEST Free to enter. One entry per publication per category. Up to four students’ names may be credited on an entry; entries with more than four participants will be submitted as “Staff.” The upload window is Sept. 29­Oct. 8. Details on how to submit entries will be provided to publications registered for the workshop. 01 Product Commercial Submit a 30­second commercial taken from the “Moments of Happiness Coca­Cola campaign.” The Coca­Cola prop must be used and seen in the commercial. Judges will look for originality, performance,video quality, audio quality and an effective call to action. 02 Stand Up Submit a 90­second informative package on the importance of washing your hands. Judges will look for originality, performance,video quality, audio quality and an effective call to action. 03 Broadcast show opening Submit a 45­second introduction to your school’s news show. Upload to YouTube, SchoolTube or Vimeo and submit the weblink. Judges will look for originality, performance,video quality, audio quality and an effective call to action. 04 Community Feature Package Submit up to a 2½ minute story on a happening in your community. Upload to YouTube, SchoolTube or Vimeo and submit the weblink. Judges will look for originality, performance,video quality, audio quality and an effective call to action. 05 PSA 30 second Submit a 30­second public service announcement. Upload to YouTube, SchoolTube or Vimeo and submit the weblink. Judges will look for originality, performance,video quality, audio quality and an effective call to action. 06 Silent Story Submit a 60­second silent story on the topic of “Friendship.” The prompt MUST be used. Upload to YouTube, SchoolTube or Vimeo and submit the weblink. Judges will look for originality, performance,video quality, audio quality and an effective call to action. 07 Video Short Story Submit an up to 3 ½ minute movie based on the topic “This is why we can’t have nice things” the prompt MUST be used and seen in the movie. Upload to YouTube, SchoolTube or Vimeo and submit the weblink. Judges will look for originality, performance,video quality, audio quality and an effective call to action. 08 1 in 8 million Submit an up to a 2 ½ single slideshow that may consist of still photos, audio or video and requires no user interaction other than start/stop, next/previous or image number buttons to view. Judges will look for originality, performance,video quality, audio quality and an effective call to action. 09 Illustration Submit and computer­ or hand­drawn illustration that would be suitable to accompany an editorial encouraging students to get involved in the 2014 election season. Students will submit a .jpg or .pdf file.Judges will evaluate artistic quality, technique, focus, theme/meaning and originality. 10 Sports Game Twitter Coverage Submit a series of twitter posts from coverage of a single sporting event from the 2014­15 school year.Submit a single Word document with the twitter user name and the date of the sporting event to be evaluated. Judges will evaluate frequency of updates, audience interaction, stating more than just the obvious and use of multimedia. 11 News/Feature Photo (non Sports) Submit a single .jpg image that captures a candid (not posed) moment. Judges will look for effective composition, high technical quality, creativity/originality, human interest and an image that tells as story. 12 Sports Action Submit a single .jpg image that captures a single picture showing participation in a game or athletic event. Judges will look for effective composition, high technical quality, creativity/originality, human interest and an image that tells as story. 13 “Selfie”/My Life Submit a single .jpg image that captures a single picture of you. Your picture must prove that it was captured within the time frame of the contest. The selfie must also be captioned. Judges will look for effective composition, high technical quality, creativity/originality, human interest and an image that tells as story. 14 Personality Portrait Submit a single .jpg image that captures a single picture focusing on the subject's character. Judges will look for effective composition, high technical quality, creativity/originality, human interest and an image that tells as story. 15 Literary Magazine Spreads When planning a publication, it’s important to not settle on the first design concept. For this exercise, you will submit two different literary magazine spreads that utilize the same text. You may use poetry, prose or both in your submission, and those selections should appear in both spreads. Your use of artwork, headline treatments, etc. should vary. Judges will evaluate design, use of visuals, quality of text and originality. Submit two PDF files. 16 Ice Bucket Challenge Spread Create a double­page spread (newspaper or yearbook) suitable for your publication about the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, which has been in the news in recent weeks. Judges will evaluate writing, design, photography, creativity/originality and overall effectiveness. Submit a single PDF document. 17 Back to School Spread Create a double­page spread (newspaper or yearbook) suitable for your publication about the start of the 2014­15 school year. Judges will evaluate writing,overall effectiveness. Submit a single PDF document. 18 Creative Q­and­A Submit an effectively executed question­and­answer package. The document can be published from April 2014 to present or can be a mock­up from the current school year. Judges will evaluate the quality of the questions and information conveyed, the effective use typography, the integration of visuals and creativity. 4 x 6 inch module 19 TV Review Write a max­400 word review of the new Fox sitcom Mulaney, which debuts on Sunday, Oct. 5 at 9:30 p.m. on Fox (Time subject to be later due to Sunday football). If you miss that airing, it may be available at Fox.com, Hulu or iTunes. Submit a weblink if published online or a PDF or Word document. Judges will look for effective integration of background knowledge, clear knowledge of genre, reviewers’ voice and proper grammar/style. 20 Short Story Compose a 600­800 word story that takes place entirely inside a Starbucks. Judges will look for a clever title, engaging intro, well­developed narration, well­developed characters and clear structure. Submit a Word document or PDF.
