FOREST PROPERTIES STRATEGY MAP Vision: The SUNY‐ESF Forest Properties will be a tightly integrated system of both outdoor – as well as virtual – classrooms and laboratories dedicated to the creation, dissemination and application of knowledge about ecological systems and their management. The ESF Forest Property System will be acknowledged as a key strategic asset, the College forests themselves as paragons of sustainable management, and the forest properties staff as the preeminent internal support services department throughout the SUNY system. Around here you are required, not just encouraged, to learn and develop new skills. Each year we will invest a significant amount of time in things that will pay off in the future. People within our office always treat others with respect. We will operate with a “stewardship” mentality toward our junior people, accepting the obligation to coach, mentor and develop those who report to us. Those in managerial roles will be selected, evaluated and remunerated primarily on the success of their group, rather than their individual performance. Discretionary salary increases will be driven by a judgmental assessment of overall contribution to the success of the Department, not on short‐term individual performance. All decisions will be made on the principle that we put the College’s interest first, the Department’s second and the individual’s last. We do not accept people who fail to operate in this way. Mission: As trustee of and steward for the SUNY‐ESF forest property resources, the mission of the Department is to ensure the long‐term health, viability, and productivity of the College forests in support of the institution’s overall instructional, research, and public service endeavors. The DFP facilitates this purpose through: 1) Efficient and cost‐effective asset management of the College’s real property, forest and natural resource portfolio; 2) Promotion and facilitation of forest‐related teaching, research and demonstration projects; 3) Coordinating the planning, organization and management of the properties; and 4) Providing monitoring, information management, and forest operations support services to our faculty, students, partners and other stakeholders.
